==New Zealand greenstone

The Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday 2 November 1842, p4 [2]

LAND AT PORT NICHOLSON

GREEN STONE.-At the conclusion of his lecture, Mr. Lyon put us in possession of a curious fact connected with the development of the mineral wealth of the southern island, namely, that the green- stone,, or poonamor, of the natives, a spe- cies of talc slate, is in such demand in the Chinese market, tor the manufacture of their idols, ornaments, &c, that as much as ₤1500 per ton can be had for it. He referred to the fact that a vessel had actually been fitted out from this port, in May last, by Mr. Elgar, of Sydney, for the purpose of speculating in a cargo of it ; that vessel, the Royal Mail, proceeded down to Milford Haven, on the west coast, where she is now trading, and is to be joined by the Anita, in about a month hence, to proceed to China and dispose of her valuable cargo.-Colonist.

Dendy's Special Survey[edit]

Obviously there was some opposition from authorities.

There is editorial in Sydney Gazette.[8]

Good background on the Special Surveys.[9]

According to Caddow:[10]

... in February 1841 ... Henry Dendy arrived from England with the first order for a special survey. This order allowed him to purchase any land of his choosing in the Port Phillip District, providing it was not a government township. La Trobe and Governor Gipps were at once opposed to the special survey system.

Atkinson's Survey[edit]

James Atkinson's special survey at Port Fairy. Mention of it "everywhere" on the web but nothing definitive.

Shown on the County of Villiers map, Victoria. Dept. of Crown Lands and Survey. (1866) [4]

This also show's William Rutledge's survey nearby.

Background on early days of Port Fairy in Griffith Island and Merrijig Inn entries of VHD

Rutledge's surveys[edit]

There are mention of two on the web:

  1. Kilmore - sold in 1843. Is in the County of Dalhousie. Shown in County of Bourke (1866) map [5]
  2. Koroit, near Port Fairy. See map of County of Villiers map, Victoria. Dept. of Crown Lands and Survey. (1866) [6]

Nothing about Port Albert. Was this swapped for Koroit.

Albert River surveys[edit]

These are in the County of Buln Buln

Some discussion in The Book of the Bush by George Dunderdale. Mentions both Orrs and Reeve's special surveys.

Gazettes and Newspapers[edit]

The Victoria Government Gazette website includes images of every page of every relevant gazette and government notice produced since 1836. These include:

  • New South Wales Government Gazette (NSW) 1836 - 1851 (provided from the collection of the State Library of New South Wales)
  • Port Phillip Government Notices (PP) January - 12 July 1843
  • Port Phillip Government Gazette (PP) January 1844 - July 1851
  • Victoria Government Gazette (VIC) July 1851 - 1997

Books[edit]

  • Discovery and settlement of Port Phillip, James Bonwick (1856)[13]. This is online.
  • Book by Shaw[14] seems very relevant. Some pages are shown in Google Books, and there seems to be around 10 pages on special surveys. Boroondara Library hold this.
