Athletics[edit]

Lowell Senior High School offers the following sports:

Marching Band[edit]

The Lowell High School Marching Red Devils (LMRD) first began competing in ISSMA Marching Band Competitions in 1986 under director Gary Stout, receiving a Bronze at District level. Since then, the band has seen many other directors: Gary Stout (1986-unknown), Chris Harmon (1993-1996), Kevin Schussler (1996-1997), James Scheckler (1997-2000), Tim Kovarik (2000-2002), and Andrew Killion (2002-present). The LMRD performed at their first ISSMA Semi-State competition in 2008, returning in 2010 and 2011. The Lowell Wind Ensemble (Advanced Band) performed in their first ISSMA State Qualification Concert Band competition in 2010, receiving Gold. They returned in 2011 and 2012 to once again earn Gold, as well as the “With Distinction” honor for superior scores. The LHS Band Department has won the ISSMA All Music Award – an award given to music departments that receive Gold in Marching, Jazz Band, and Concert Band competitions, and for sending at least one ensemble to ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble competitions. They have won this award for the past seven years, starting with their 2006-2007 season.

Academic Teams[edit]

Academic Spell Bowl was started in 1999 and led by teachers Megan Iussig and Joeseph Gianotti. In 2002 to 2006, it was led by Sherry Peters and Margaret Hurt. From 2007 to 2012 it was led once more by English teacher Joeseph Gianotti. The team is recently led by English teacher Christine Hickman. Academic Spell Bowl is much like a spelling bee, except that there are multiple words in one round for a single person, many more words to memorize and it is written instead of spoken.

Academic Super Bowl was started in 1990 and led by unknown coaches until 1994, when it was shut down. The school restarted the team in 2000 under Joseph Gianotti. Academic Super Bowl consists of learning a single subject (or more than one of the subjects, by choice) after school, much like a secondary class, and competing against other teams on a multiple choice test over each subject. The subjects include Science, History, English, Fine Arts (music, art, dance), Math, and Interdisciplinary (a mix of all of the other subjects), each having their own coaches.

  • Sue McQuiston 2000-2004
  • May Lee 2005-2007
  • Ashlee Smith 2008-2010
  • Joseph Gianotti 2011-2012
  • Ann Fountain 2013-present

  • Lindsay Hudak & Chris Werling 2007-2009
  • Chris Werling 2010-present

  • Megan Iussig 2000-2004
  • Joseph Gianotti 2005-2012
  • Maureen Frame present

Fine Arts:

  • Jason McGee 2004-2005
  • Bridget Swinford 2006-2012
  • Ann Fountain present

Academic Decathlon started in 1990 under director Kirk McQuiston. In 1994, the Decathlon team was under a second director, Joe Bliha, followed by another coach, Joeseph Gianotti, in 2000 who still coaches the team today. Academic Decathlon is much like Academic Super Bowl (see below) except that it is more rigorous and requires the student to learn every one of the categories; the same as Academic Super Bowl, including Speech, Interview, Economics and Essay.

Choir[edit]

Lowell offers four classes of choir: beginning mixed choir, advanced mixed choir, beginning female choir, and intermediate female choir, as well as an after-school club designated to show (also known as swing) choir. Two of the four choir classes compete at ISSMA competitions in Group 1 at Gold level. A third choir class competes at ISSMA competitions in Group 2 at Gold level. Beginning mixed choir competed for the first time in 2013 at ISSMA competitions in Group 3. The classes compete in the categories of solo and ensemble. The four choir classes join together four times a year to perform public concerts, each class learning a collection of songs at their vocal level that ties in to an overarching theme. Some students from the LHS choir also get selected through competitions to sing the National Anthem at sporting events -- such as at the Railcats Stadium in Chicago, IL.

Notable alumni[edit]
