About this template[edit]

Created this collapsable navigation box template for UK television transmitter pages (aka transmitting stations). It covers main transmitters and relays.

Information originally sourced from these two URLs:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/transmitters/tv/index.shtml & http://www.wolfbane.com/articles/uknew.htm , with further channel 5 info added from existing Wikipedia articles.

The template shows main transmitting sites in alphabetical order in the lefthand column, and dependant relays (or more accurately, transmitters of the same group including "channel5-only" transmitters serving the same region) in the righthand column, also in alphabetic order within each row.

The template covers the UK and the Isle of Man.

The transmitter pages have been lacking a template (for example analogous to railway station templates of the UK). There has also been no template to show the organisational structure of the transmitter network. This template somewhat addresses that for TV transmitter articles at least, by showing each transmitter within the entire UK TV broadcasting network.

It should show all 625-line transmitters and realys (soon to be digital) in active service.

It does not show radio-only transmitters or transmitters which previously broadcast TV, but don't any more.

This template does not assume anything about the notability of each red-linked transmitter site. Some of the already linked pages are notbale enough to have their own article, others are currently found in subsections of other articles. A few reside within the main article of the place they serve.

Hopefully, we can get some further, well sourced articles on some of the more notable relays and also for the few main transmitter sites that still lack an article.

This template assumes a canonical name for UK TV transmitters of the form "(name) transmitting station", which the majority of relevant articles already use. Although, I have already changed a few wiki-links within this template where existing articles did not use this form.

Because this template is so large, I have set it to always collapse.

First incarnation: I'm testing this template out for the first time on the Storeton transmitting station page. Corrections or improvements welcome. Benkid77 (talk) 19:31, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not useful[edit]

This HUGE template is clearly not useful, both due to its size and the number of red-links. Please turn the template into a List of television transmitters in the UK, and turn the red-links into ordinary text. Then, provide the sources that you have given above in the list article. If you are addressing the template's creator, they appear to have retired, so the conversion will have to be made by someone else. I might give it a shot, but I have precious little time at the moment, so it will probably have to wait a bit. In any case, as I have said in the other thread, the template may not have to be deleted: the relays are certainly unnecessary, but a navbox for television transmitters in the UK may be useful. Hi all, I was the orginal creator of this template. (My previous account was benkid77) Firstly let me say I agree with all of your comments. I created this template back when I was a still a relative Wikipedia newbie and looking back with hindsight I can see now it was clearly wrong to add all of those redlinks. However, I've been really busy recently and I just did not have time to fix it for which I can only apologise. So thanks very much to ZanderSchubert for fixing it. I'm certainly happy with it the way it is now (with just new sites being added as the articles are actually written and notability established). It does appear to be very useful now the way it is organised into regions and reduced down to a reasonable size. There is no doubt that a template was needed and now I think we have more or less the right one. Thanks again all Green Lane (talk) 08:43, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It does look much better now; I didn't have the time to fix it myself, either, so I am glad for the colleague who has taken care of this. Waltham, The Duke of 01:23, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
