Bug report

I have a bug report for this template. It gives the number of entries in the given category, not the number of pages. Those entries can be subcategoties as well as pages. See the end of the initial blurb of WP:Authority control for an example of this template giving misleading information.

I propose having two templates to take the place of this one. ENTRIESINCATEGORY which will have the current behaviour of this template (how many entries, be they articles or subcategories) and a new PAGESINCATEGORY which recursively counts only articles, etc., but not subcategories, where it gives the number of pages in each subcategory. Pages in subcategories

Is there a way to show the total number of pages in a category that includes all pages in all subcategories of all subcategories (...) of a category? It doesn't work with this template. --Fixuture (talk) 18:39, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

No. One reason is that this would be potentially a very expensive template to evaluate. Another is that we can have category cycles. Thirdly the value might change too often. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 16:26, 1 March 2024 (UTC).
