Donald Locke, Edward Rupert Burrowes, Stewartville, Guyana[edit]

Created/expanded by Aymatth2 (talk). Self nom at 01:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

  • All three articles qualify on length and newness. All are well-supported by ref citations and have wording that is sufficiently different from the sources I checked. However, I have concerns about the hook. I do not find support in the sources for the assertion that Locke was "inspired" by Burrowes. Further, I don't see value in combining the Stewartville article in a hook with the articles about the two artists. Stewartville has almost nothing to do with the other articles (Locke was born there and lived there to about age 8), and its inclusion in the hook merely detracts from the hook interest, IMO.
I'd like to extract Stewartville from this hook and write a separate hook for it. Before doing that, though, I think the Stewartville article should be revisited -- to me, parts of the article read like a collection of "every news item that mentions Stewartville that turned up in a Google News search" (as a Wikipedia contributor, I may recognize this better than the casual reader might ;-)). I think some of those items don't belong in an encyclopedia article and some parts should be rewritten to focus on presenting the facts and not describing the news stories. The article contains several possible topics for hooks, but I haven't drafted one yet.
@Orlady it is sort everything about Stewartville that turned up in a search, but I am not sure the effect is bad, so much as impressionistic. I think it does give a sense of the place, although incomplete. See below, though. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Back to the original hook, I recommend (and approve) the following minor rewording:
Stewartville hooks
  • ALT1a-0 ... that Stewartville, a village district of Guyana, has warm temperatures and two periods of rainfall per year?
  • ALT1a-1 ... that Stewartville, a village district of Guyana, has a history of defense infrastructure damages caused by floods?
  • I'm trying to split off one article, but I cannot find good hook to pick. --George Ho (talk) 15:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
I was thinking in terms of something about the coastal erosion, but I would not use the fancy words "defense infrastructure damages" when the issue is in fact that the sea walls keep needing to be repaired. I was thinking of something like:
  • ALT1a-2 ... that shore erosion has been a concern in Stewartville, a village district on the Guyana coast, since as early as 1918?
I was hoping to propose a hook about the region's history of settlement by Africans who had previously been slaves and later by estate workers from India, but the sourcing for those statements in the article seems weak (based on the snippet views of documents that Google shows me). The hook about climate is boring, IMO. --Orlady (talk) 16:40, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
  • As the party guilty of submitting these, I am fine with just dropping Stewartville altogether, so have struck the original tag and dropped the DYKmake template for it. Let's go with ALT1. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
