Bencie Woll[edit]

  • ... that Bencie Woll was the first person to hold a professorship in sign language in the United Kingdom? Source: "Woll previously held the first Chair in Sign Language and Deaf Studies in the UK" (BAAL)

  • Recently created, within policy, no copy-vio I could detect, well written, well sourced, hook is interesting and cited, and QPQ is done. Good to go. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 19:44, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I am having trouble finding the citation that verifies the hook fact. Of the three cites given after the sentence about her being the "first", one is a primary source written by the subject, one is a write-up by a speakers bureau, and the third doesn't mention it. I would think that for such a notable achievement, she would have been written up in a "who's who" directory or biography of important linguists. Yoninah (talk) 20:19, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
  • All three citations verify the hook. It's directly stated in all three and thereby WP:PRIMARY doesn't apply (there has been no original research): "primary sources that have been reputably published may be used in Wikipedia ... Any interpretation of primary source material requires a reliable secondary source for that interpretation". For the third reference you need to look under the "Biography" tab. I hope this clarifies things, Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 20:39, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Well, the third source is also written by the subject. I understand WP:PRIMARY to mean that biographical details about the subject can be lifted from primary sources, with discretion. But for DYK, I would request an independent, secondary source to verify the subject being the "first" in her field. Yoninah (talk) 21:31, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Could you point me towards the rule that states a secondary source is required? The only DYK rules I can find require reliable sources (without specifying primary/secondary/tertiary). Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 16:16, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
  • As I said, this is something specific to DYK. Too many times we say that someone is the "first" and then the hook gets pulled because an astute editor finds other people who did it before them. I went ahead and added an independent source to your hook fact. Restoring tick per Captain Assassin!'s review. Yoninah (talk) 21:16, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you for finding that reference. I understand your point of view. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 16:41, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
