The section of “Criticism based on effectiveness”, was missing links that led to real sources for where the author found the information, perhaps because some links were outdated. I also realized that this article was missing more information on the economic analysis on the cost benefit of incarcerating youth. For something that so much money is funneled into, who is financially benefitting of youth detention centers and what does the flow of the money look like? I also noticed that the section titled “Promoting alternatives” did not have enough citations to support what had been presented. Overall, the article talks a lot about why youth incarceration is not effective to addressing juvenile delinquency. I have a biased opinion in that this country should really look into alternative and most cost-effective programs but I acknowledge that there is not sufficient information on here as to why so much money continues to fund youth imprisonment. This is mostly a direct copy from the (now truncated) Youth incarceration section of Incarceration in the United States. I did go through and try to improve the references, both in format (replacing bare urls with fleshed out cite tags, using Harvard reference format to avoid recapitulating common sources multiple times for different pages, etc.), and in some cases, content (direct links to the source instead of useless homepage links). Any cite tag with an accessdate of 2009-11-06 has been fully checked; many of the others could benefit from verification and adding urls if available (my attention span ran out before I had cleaned up all of them). And of course, if someone could provide/flesh out some of the arguments in favor of the U.S.'s high rate of youth incarceration, it would help to even out the strong anti-incarceration slant of the article. I will admit to enough personal bias in the anti-direction that it would be difficult for me to present a wholly unbiased view, and would greatly appreciate help with this (so long as it's sourced; I really don't need people adding drive by personal opinion political messages). --ShadowRangerRIT (talk) 21:33, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Proposed Project

I am a student at Rice University in Houston, TX, and as part of a class assignment was thinking of creating a new article that is related to this page on the Juvenile Justice System in the United States. There is currently a very short article American juvenile justice system, which has multiple issues with citation, quality, and objectivity. It has been suggested that the article be deleted entirely. I thought it would be a good idea to write a new article that covered issues the original does not, and that would allow the current one to be removed. My proposed contribution would have a link to this page, and would provide a broader overview of the juvenile justice system with regards to how adolescents are tried, as well as methods of juvenile punishment other than incarceration (for example, I would describe the use and effectiveness of alternative schools). My proposed article would include sections on the History and Background of the juvenile justice system; the demographic makeup of adolescents in the juvenile justice system by race, gender, and socioeconomic status; criticisms of the juvenile justice system and its relationship to adult crime (are people in tried and convicted in the system more likely to engage in criminal activity as adults); and proposed reforms to the system in general.
