Origin of name

To be encyclopedic, the article should 1) state from which Native American language "Wykagyl" was derived, and 2) provide an authoritative source for this assertion. Myron (talk) 04:23, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Notable residents

I think this section should be deleted entirely. It's not clear to me why the fact that someone "notable" lives or lived in a place is interesting, unless there is a common theme like a skill or profession, suggesting the place was a haunt of, say, artists. Wykagyl, New York and zip code 10804 are not the same

This article is currently referring to Wykagyl, New York and the zip code 10804 as being the same, which is not correct. Until this edit on May 11, the article correctly stated: "It shares the 10804 zip code with the greater "North End," yet is independently served by the 'Wykagyl Station' branch of the post office." What is the meaning of the statement "yet is independently served by the 'Wykagyl Station' branch of the post office"? Are there two different post offices in the zip code? Regardless of its meaning, is it important to include? --Orlady (talk) 22:57, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

According to the USPS website, zips 10801-10805 are in New Rochelle. The 10804 zip code is served by the Wykagyl PO, which is in NR. Mail addressed to people in that area can be addressed to "Wykagyl, NY," even though Wykagyl is just a section of New Rochelle. According to the NR website, there are only two PO's in NR, the main PO and the Wykagyl PO. The statement we're discussing seems to indicate that the Wykagyl PO serves an area of NR that is wider than just Wykagyl, which may well be true. Having said all that, I'm still unable to explain the "yet" clause in the statement. And in answer to your question, there seems to be only one PO in the zip code. BTW, on a personal (and therefore irrelevant) note, I just want to point out what a bizarre turn this chain of events has taken for me. This whole sequence began (many months ago) when JVolkBlum complained about my editing in the Sarah Lawrence College article, so I began watching articles involving her and her clones. Which has led me to this article. And I say this is bizarre to me because, even though I live in Dallas, my father happens to live in zip code 10804. HMishkoff (talk) 23:34, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Just to clarify, according to the USPS website New Rochelle, NY is the actual city name for 10804 and that Wykagyl, NY is an acceptable city name. Wykagyl is also the name of community in New Rochelle, which this article is about. I haven't been able to find anything that details what area the Wykagyl Station post office serves. If you look up the zip code for Wykagyl on the USPS site, it returns only 10804. (In other words, no other zip code serves Wykagyl.) Conversely, if you look up 10804, you learn that it is entirely within the boundaries of New Rochelle, but that "Wykagyl" is an acceptable city address in that zip code. The only possible conclusion I see from these facts is that (1) Wykagyl is entirely within the 10804 zip code, and (2) the 10804 zip may or may not extend to areas other than Wykagyl as well. Because Wykagyl is the informal name of an area (as opposed to a formal geopolitical subdivision), it has no definite boundaries, and as a result it is not possible to resolve that "may or may not" in #2 with any certainty, no matter how long we discuss it or how thoroughly we research it. On the other hand, the really important fact about Wykagyl is that there's a bakery in the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center that sells the best bialys I've ever had in my life. The answer to number 2, is that zip code 10804 includes communities other than Wykagyl. Comparing Google Maps (which shows communities on maps) and the map of the zip code, shows that communities listed along side of Wykagyl in the Communities section of New Rochelle, New York#Residential profile are in the zip code. Among the other communites are Victory Park, Bonnie Crest, and Forest Knoll. BlueAzure (talk) 04:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

North End reference/ 10804 zip-code

The statement "It shares the 10804 zip code with the greater "North End," yet is independently served by the 'Wykagyl Station' branch of the post office" is not correct. There is a 'greater North End' if (for example) one is making a geographical distinction between different sections within the city. The "North End" of the city is not, however, served by one zip-code. The northernmost section of New Rochelle (the northern portion of the "North End") is under the "10583" zip-code of scarsdale town/village (Wilmot, Wilmot Woods). Portions of the "North End" also fall under the "10538" zip-code of neighboring Larchmont village (Larchmont Woods). Additionally, several "North End" areas are are under the "10801" zip-code which covers much of the citys mid-section and downtown area. Correctly understood, not all of the "North End" is part of Wykagyl or a part of the 10804 zipcode. All of 'Wykagyl', however, is covered by that zip-code. The Wykagyl Station Post Office makes a clear reference to its location in its name. As discussed by a prior user, ("Mail addressed to people in that area can be addressed to "Wykagyl, NY," even though Wykagyl is just a section of New Rochelle).
The USPS site lists 'wykagyl' as an acceptable mailing alternative to 'New Rochelle' when sending mail to 10804. Meaning of Wykagyl

I checked the citation for the statement "It is believed that the area's unusual name was created through the combination of two Native American words: "wigwos," meaning 'birch bark,' and "keag," meaning 'country,' to form Wykagyl" and found that it was falsified. Page 215 of New York - A Guide to The Empire State, is a map of Buffalo, New York. The only mention of the Wykagyl in the book is a mention Wykagyl Country Club on page 244. The information appears to have actual been taken from the Wykagyl Country Club's website. This is a not reliable source and they even state that they are not sure if that is the origin or the name was made up by one of their members. It was also mentioned in an article about the country club (search for wykagyl wigwos and select the page with domain goliath.ecnext.com to view that article), in which the statement is attributed to country club's official history. According to another book, that combination of words creates the word Weckquaesgeek and a number of variations, that do not appear to be very similar to the word Wykagyl. There was a separate stub article about a Bayberry Park neighborhood within the larger Wykagyl neighborhood. Perhaps it should be mentioned in this article. And, if it is not even mentioned here, it seems not notable on its own.
