i thought you cant exploit gpl stuff for monetary gain

That's a pretty big misunderstanding of GPL. For example, take Linux, arguably the most well-known GPL software. There are many, many commercial Linux distributions. What GPL requires is that modifications to the GPL software are themselves released under a GPL (or compatible) license. So if 3D Realms updates Darkplaces during their development, they would be required to release the source code to the engine upon distribution of Wrath. Yeah I don't think commercial use is a problem. The plan to release on consoles is, however, since you can't comply with the GPL and the platform's NDA at the same time. I believe this is why the commercial release of Nexuiz was rewritten from darkplaces to cryengine. 157.109.172.252 (talk) 05:13, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
