i thought you cant exploit gpl stuff for monetary gain

That's a pretty big misunderstanding of GPL. For example, take Linux, arguably the most well-known GPL software. There are many, many commercial Linux distributions. What GPL requires is that modifications to the GPL software are themselves released under a GPL (or compatible) license. So if 3D Realms updates Darkplaces during their development, they would be required to release the source code to the engine upon distribution of Wrath. The Wrath trademarks and game data remain the property of 3D Realms. Metalliqaz (talk) 03:23, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I don't think commercial use is a problem. The plan to release on consoles is, however, since you can't comply with the GPL and the platform's NDA at the same time. I believe this is why the commercial release of Nexuiz was rewritten from darkplaces to cryengine. 157.109.172.252 (talk) 05:13, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
