Name[edit]

Worms Cathedral may be incorrect, but the mixture of an English Saint's name with the German word Dom, linked to the Italian Duomo, which takes us to Cathedral again, is perhaps even less satisfactory. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:46, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding: St Peter's Dom, Worms is not a common name. IF we have a construction like that (wich nobody uses), how about doing it in pure German: St. Peter, Worms. German church and parish names have St. if Sankt (Saint) is abbreviated, not St, and if St. appears, not with an English possessive form, but a Latin one. Compare St. Peter, Syburg. For another Dom which is not a cathedral, with a Latin possessive, s. St. Patrokli, Soest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:36, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I made the change because I vaguely remembered that similar change had been made for the Dom in Soest and I found it confusing to refer to a place which still exists but is not a cathedral as a cathedral. I find the policy regarding rendering foreign names into English confusing, but I assumed that it demanded "St Peter's". I find St. Peter, Worms confusing because at first sight I assume that it refers to a saint from Worms rather than a church in Worms. My preference personally would be for Wormser Dom or Dom St. Peter, really. Furius (talk) 10:50, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The saints typically don't get a place name attached, just the name is good for both church and parish ;) - I would go for Wormser Dom, the common name. Don't remember where we recently had a discussion, someone wanted Minster because a church was no cathedral, but that's again different. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:32, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article update[edit]

I've updated the lead summary, added an infobox:church, updated the 'Bells' section and removed the word 'Dom' and other German from this English article. Well we call St. Giles' Cathedral a cathedral, we call Glasgow Cathedral a cathedral, we call St. Machar's Cathedral (Aberdeen) a cathedral, and loads of other churches throughout the English-speaking world -MrHistorianDude (talk) 16:29, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your move personally, but I think it was rather disingenuous to request this as an "uncontested move" (and to change all the mentions in the body text) when the only previous discussion (admittedly with only two participants) came to the exact opposite consensus. Oppau Explosion[edit]

Good catch! The de.wiki article on the Oppau explosion mentions the same fact and cites a detailed account on the website of Worms Cathedral for the details. This isn't an ideal source, but acceptable and could form the basis of an addition to this article as well!
