Championship status of this match appears doubtful[edit]
While the sources cited doubtlessly claim championship status, they are quite late, and misinterpretations may have sneaked in between 1889 and date of their writing. The page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Steinitz) presents a somewhat different picture of the match. (It doesn't follow its own sources fully, though.).
