As I seem to remember, the history of the crematorium is not properly reflected. If I am not mistaken the crematorium was originally built as a test facility to experiment with cremation. When these experiments were succesful and cremation was made legal, Golders Green Crematorium was built. The test site then became the Woking Crematorium. JHvW 20:53, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The above statement is doubtful if only because of the actual proximity of the events; Golders Green Crematorium was not opened until 1902, by which time cremation had been legal for 18 years.Cloptonson (talk) 20:48, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One of the reasons why I believe this is so is that in the history book published by Golders Green Crematorium (of which I unfortunately do not have a copy), the exact same story about it's origins are stated as for those of Woking Crematorium. Henry Thompson and some others believed that cremation was a better alternative to burial. The dates mentioned are interesting but they do not reflect the social attitude to cremation. Cremation did not become reasonably acceptable until the Twentieth Century. Raising the funds to build and actually building Golders Green Crematorium took a long time. There is also (of course) the commercial aspect. Between the legalisation of cremation and the opening of Golders Green relatively few (a few hundred) cremations took place. So the time span between the first test (1879), the first cremation (in 1885, although then legal, a very controversial happening), and the opening of Golders Green Crematorium (1902) is not really an argument. If the facility was built as a proving ground for Golders Green but subsequently became a crematorium in it's own right, technically Woking Crematorium would still be the first crematorium in the United Kingdom. My interest is more in the accuracy of the history as Wikipedia likes to be a repository for facts. JHvW 09:34, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
