This is very opinionated.[edit]

"He very correctly understood that the fine art of self-promotion and the cult of personality would sell his books even if the poems themselves were second-rate." What? Where's the evidence MacDonald thought his books were second-rate? Or that he thought he could sell second-rate books. Or, the evidence he was 'correct'. (Presumably, the writer thinks he was correct because his writing did sell, but that begs the question of its second-ratedness.)
