Scottish[edit]
What's 'Scottish' about it, exactly? Isn't this akin to claiming Wilson is also an 'American' or a 'Canadian' or an 'Australian' last name simply because it's recorded in America and has been historically? Scottish / Irish Origins (among other possible origins)[edit]
It is no different than, say, the origins of the (also patronymic) surname “Ferguson,” which is unquestionably of Scottish origin. William has been a common name in Scotland for around a thousand years (William Wallace just for the sake of example). It cannot be said that the surname “Wilson” is English alone. That simply doesn’t make sense.
It cannot be known where every instance (or even most instances) of “Wilson” originates, but to say they are all English would require a great deal of explaining considering it remains the third most common surname in Scotland. 2601:2C2:684:100:0:0:0:9DBB (talk) 01:19, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
