Candidate for Laureateship[edit]

His opposition to the Boer War of 1899-1902 could not have ruled him out of the contest following Tennyson's death, when Austin was selected in 1896. It might have ruled him out the next time round, when Austin died in 1913, but I don't think the Liberal government was so worried about pro-Boers. 86.180.124.119 (talk) 17:18, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quality of his verse?[edit]

popular in his time for the celebratory content... of his verse.

Can you give us a better idea of the quality of his poetry, relative to other poets? Valetude (talk) 13:37, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
