The original entry on this page was written and contributed by historian Richard Harris Smith on August 17, 2009.

Beyond a brief listing in http://www.politicalgraveyard.com, there seems to be no other comprehensive biographic source on Malone.

This sketch is primarily based on scattered references in Oral History interviews of Democratic politicians conducted by the California State Archives; the Regional Oral History Office of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley; and tne Truman Presidential Library, including those of former California Attorney General Robert Kenny, Judge Oliver Carter, San Francisco Assemblyman John O'Connell, and California Democratic Party chairmen John McEnery and Roger Kent.

A few details of Malone's earlier life were found in 1930 Census data at http://www.ancestry.com

Arthur Samish's early connection to "Boss Finn" is mentioned in his autobiography, written with Bob Thomas, The Secret Boss of California; the Life and high times of Art Samish (NY, 1971)

The Burton family's insurgency to replace Malone is recorded by John Jacobs, A Rage for Justice: The Passion and Politics of Phillip Burton (University of California Press, 1995) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesofur (talkcontribs) 02:29, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
