American Whaling In NZ waters[edit]

There is little information about the large numbers of American ships whaling off the NZ coast around 1830. In fact the Americans ships were far more successful than British ships. British ships had very large crews (80-100) compared to US ships(30) which gave them a big advantage in costs. The American ships seemed to have needed less maintenance possibly due to greater use of iron to strengthen their ships. American ships operating from the west coast had a much shorter distance to travel than British ships. The only competitors with the Americans were whalers operating from shore stations.Often these shore stations were being run and financed from Sydney. They operated mainly in the South Island on the east coast between Riverton and Cloudy Bay.115.188.178.77 (talk) 19:52, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
