Archive of GA Review[edit]

I noticed the link had been created but nothing moved yet. Considering it's 37kb long and the article has been promoted, I went ahead and transfered everything into the archive. Just name the next archive May 2007—[whatever]. Since GA Review is specified in this archive title, it will be easily accessible to anyone who may want to find it. PublicSchoolReview.com Update[edit]

First Wikipedia:Standard GFDL violation letter per Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks#Non-compliance process received NO RESPONSE from Publicschoolreview.com. I have just sent the 2nd response. Zidel333 04:30, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should check the page again [1]. They added the statement Source: Wikipedia; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License. You may redistribute it, verbatim or modified, providing that you comply with the terms of the GFDL. They only made the change for Westfield, though. Arsonal 07:05, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, didn't notice that. And they gave me no email response saying that had complied. I will email them asking for the any and all articles that use Wikipedia as a source be covered under GFDL. Thanks Arsonal. Zidel333 02:45, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Recieved a response from a "Javier". I have replied to this asking him to site Wikipedia on each and every school article on PublicSchoolReview.com. I await his response. Also, added Public School Review to the Wikipedia Mirrors and Forks List. Note to self, must email other related companies to Public School Review to ensure GFDL licensing. Zidel333 02:20, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Another reply from Javier, he is updating the entire website for the next few weeks to comply with Licensing policy. I will check back to review the website in early//mid June to see if progress has been made. I would appreciate any help in this. Thanks. Zidel333 23:16, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Vaccarino[edit]

Brian Vaccarino '02 - Flanker for James Madison University, 2004 Football Division 1 AA National Champions

I removed this information pending verification. I think it also brings back the issue of who to include in the alumni list considering Westfield's short history. What qualifies as notability in our case? Arsonal 02:07, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Guardian Copyright Licensing[edit]

I had an e-mail communication with Gary Bender, Westfield's yearbook adviser. I asked him if The Guardian's copyright is owned by Westfield or Herff-Jones, the publishing company. For future reference, this is his response:

I can tell you that Westfield holds the copyright to the yearbook and I am authorized to give permission to use an image of or from the yearbook. Please feel free to use this email as your notice of permission to use the image of the 2002 Guardian yearbook on the Westfield Wikipedia site.

Based on this release, I've uploaded two images to illustrate one of the yearbooks which won Best of Show at the 2002 NSPA conference. Arsonal 22:22, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does he know that many other sites will use the image too, and it is not just wikipedia that the image might be on? KeepOnTruckin Complain to me | my work here 22:52, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Irregardless if Mr. Bender does not know, it should be fine if said websites cite Wikipedia as the source. Zidel333 00:23, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas for WHS expansion[edit]

So, I was thinking of FA status (again), and I was thinking how we could accomplish it for WHS. The Broad Run High School is a rather extensive article that goes into further detail than WHS, and may be a good source of ideas for new sections. In the next week or so, I will be adding some more info in a similar vein as Broad Run, and other Featured Article, Good Article, and Good Article Candiates school articles. Please help. Cheers. Zidel333 15:17, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, you should take a look at the article's peer review that I requested last month. Arsonal 17:15, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did see it (it's on my watchlist), and I agree with the 1st user's comments. The 2nd round of comments contradict what LaraLove said in the GA Review. I'll work on the suggestions, although I must say Arsonal, you are much better at finding citations than I am online. :) Perhaps you can help me on that end? Zidel333 17:44, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can do. I have a bunch saved in my sandbox that I haven't gotten around to using. You just need to copy paste the template from the page edit. Arsonal 17:48, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Very cool. Now I'm excited. :D Zidel333 17:56, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Song Lyrics[edit]

I noticed that the lyrics to both the school alma mater and the fight song were incorrectly attributed, and made the correction. Jessica Lardin, the school's chorus teacher, wrote the alma mater in 2003, and dedicated it to the WHS Class of 2003; it was first performed by the Chamber Singers at that year's graduation. Ms. Lardin holds the copyright to the lyrics and the musical composition, and allows Westfield to use both with permission. It has not been confirmed for certain whether Robert McBride wrote the school fight song. Robert McBride is the husband of the previous band director, Laura McBride. Mrs. McBride passed away in 2006. It is highly recommended that Mr. McBride be contacted to confirm that he is the lyricist and composer for the fight song, and that permission is obtained for its use on Wikipedia. Ms. Lardin has given permission for her lyrics to the alma mater to appear in the article.

Logo and athletics table[edit]

For me, when I view the article, the logo overlays on the records table. I'm not sure if this is a widespread problem, or limited to my net set-up (a Mac running Firefox), but it might be good to reposition the logo somewhere else in the article so it doesn't interfere. The coding in that area is pretty delicate, so I don't want to just go in there myself and mess it up. But I thought I'd let the main editors know. matt91486 (talk) 16:25, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The same thing showed up in Firefox on Windows, but not Internet Explorer. Either way, I changed the table a bit in a way that I hope fixed the problem. --FlamingSilmaril 17:29, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Music awards[edit]

Is this worthy for keeping? Citations? I want to say that Honor orchestras and bands of America are vanity groups. Zidel333 (talk) 21:25, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

National recognitions[edit]

National recognitions (Individuals)
Name Year Event Sport/Competition
Ryan Stahl 2006 Honor Orchestra of America Instrumental Music
Thomas Polson 2007 Honor Band of America Instrumental Music
My first instinct would be to remove them, like you did. A cite would be necessary, and even then, a lot of the "recognitions" added on school pages are self-promoting vanity. FlamingSilmaril (talk) 20:07, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Drug Section -- Is it needed?[edit]

The recent news on the Heroin ring has been covered extensively by the Washington Post, but I have to ask if it's needed as it was my understanding that all involved with Westfield ALUMNI, and Westfield itself was not related whatsoever. If we cannot find a more serious connection between the dealers and the fact most attended the same high school years prior, I ask we take the section out. GA Reassessment[edit]

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Westfield High School (Fairfax County, Virginia)/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

As part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles' Project quality task force ("GA Sweeps"), all old good articles are being re-reviewed to ensure that they meet current good article criteria (as detailed at WP:WIAGA.) I have determined that this article needs some work to meet current criteria, outlined below:

  • By definition a paragraph needs at least three sentences. That means anywhere in the article there are one or two-sentence groupings, they either need to be merged together, expanded with more information, or cut entirely.
  • There are several "citation needed" tags sprinkled throughout the article, and elements that are unreferenced but not tagged. For example:
    • "An additional wing was planned to help deal with the overcrowding,[11] and was completed in summer of 2006."
    • "It was adopted by the county school board to ensure that instructional time in middle and high schools meet limits set by the Virginia Department of Education. The directive limited events such as assemblies and pep rallies by categorizing them as after-school events, with the exception of homecoming pep rallies."
    • "Chinese language and cultural elective classes are held on Sunday afternoons in the new building addition."
  • Images: What gives the uploader of File:WHSAerial08.jpg the right to freely release it? Similarly, File:WestfieldHSconstruction1.jpg does not have any indication that the uploader was in fact the author (and this seems unlikely.) It's nice that someone provided permission for File:TheGuardian2002-Athletics.jpg and File:TheGuardian2002-Cover.jpg, but we need verification, for instance forwarding of the respective emails to WP:OTRS; another problem is that the license used seems arbitrary (we can't just pick one if the copyright holder says it can be freely used, we need a specific license). The school mascot (File:Whsbulldog.jpg) is barely mentioned in the article, so why do we need a fair-use image?
  • There are a lot of quote boxes used in the article, some inappropriately. The fight song and "Black and Gold" poem are copyrighted, and there's no fair use justification for their inclusion (I have removed them.)
  • I'm concerned about the structure of the history section. Sure, it's a relatively recent school, but it seems entirely too controversy-focused, especially given the subheaders. For example, considering the drug ring mostly deals with alumni, I'm not sure why it merits its own section.
  • Partly off the above, I'm also concerned about misrepresentation of sources. For example the "Violence Controversies" section starts with "Westfield has come under scrutiny because two unrelated murders perpetrated by alumni occurred within one year." sourced to [2], but nowhere does it discuss "scrutiny". I'm also worried about occasional POV tone and unreliable references: for example, what makes FightFCPS.com or playscripts reliable?
  • The article appears out of date; it focuses on academic rankings that are more than 6-8 years old, and doesn't pass 2008 in recounting history.

I am putting the article on hold for one week pending improvements; if significant progress is made I will extend the hold. Please keep me appraised of progress on this page. Thanks, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 19:29, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    • As no apparent progress has been made on addressing the above in the time allotted, I am delisting the article. It may be renominated at any time at WP:GAN, but I encourage improvement along the above lines; trying to rework to article to gain some distance might help. If you have any questions, please use my talk page. Thanks, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 17:16, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Athletic history[edit]

Virginia changed its high school classification system for the 2013-14 school year, making some of the state championship labels inaccurate (e.g., there is so AAA Division 6 any more). I will work on updating this, but anyone else who has expertise in this subject is welcome to do so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonderweg (talkcontribs) 22:51, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
