New article?[edit]

I am thinking of creating a new article titled "Western Football League Premier Division". The content may be a bit redundant but we can shift ALL memeber clubs to this new article. This current article, "Western Football League" would then give us a general overview of the competition. This system of editing is also being folllowed by the other leagues in the English football league system. Any comments would be appreciated. On a side note, the Western Football League Division One has its own article as well. --Siva1979Talk to me 02:31, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Promotion?[edit]

I'm new to how these leagues work. Could you explain to me why Bideford haven't been promoted even though they have been division champions several times. Supposed 23:25, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bideford have chosen not to apply for promotion due to the extra expense and travelling that it would incur by playing in the regional divisions of the Southern League. If they were to go up to the next level, they would have only one other team within a 100 mile radius. They played in the Southern League between 1972-1975 and it almost bankrupted the club, taking over a decade to recover financially. They would like to try again, but not until the conditions are right. - fchd 06:13, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aye that seems crazy as there should be large financial incentives for playing in the higher divisions. What you've said is interesting, could you add something about it in the bideford article. Supposed 17:59, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

London clubs[edit]

How come the likes of Spurs and Millwall were playing in this league in its early days? ChrisTheDude 07:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Feeder Leagues[edit]

The last sentence in the lead states that the named feeder leagues "feed directly into the Western League Premier Division". Surely it is actually WFL Division One, which complies with what is stated in 2009–10 Western Football League? The infobox of South West Peninsula League also states it feeds into the Premier Division. I assume both of these are mistakes, but I thought I'd check before making the change. Zangar (talk) 11:15, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, you're right, it's a mistake. Bretonbanquet (talk) 17:49, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... After the reverts from User:PyramidEditor and looking at the National League System, I'm wondering if the South West Peninsula League does actually feed directly into WFL Premier Division (the SWPL Premier Division being at Step 6, the same as WFL Division One), whereas the other feeder leagues (all at Step 7) go into WFL Division One. In which case the sentence in this article still needs to be changed, as at the moment it sounds like they all feed into the WFL Premier Division. Zangar (talk) 11:36, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Have amended the sentence to better explain the SWLP relationship with the Western League. PyramidEditor (talk) 13:34, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's better. It's an odd sort relationship - has a team ever been promoted from/demoted to the SWPL? It might just be worth a mention in its article. Zangar (talk) 13:57, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's been no movement between the two leagues yet - Plymouth Parkway did apply a few seasons back but did not finish high enough in the SWPL Premier Division to make the leap! The other clubs (like Buckland Athletic this season) are under increasing pressure to apply for and accept promotion to the Western Premier to justify their Step 6 status, as at present - its just that - a status, not a relationship or fully functioning part of the pyramid. At the other end of the scale - Elmore are the only Western League club that would sit in SWPL territory and depite finishing bottom this season, won;t be relegated any time soon due to the vacancies the Western League has (6 in total). PyramidEditor (talk) 14:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I stand corrected - I had no idea about any of that. Definitely needed clearing up, to avoid people like me making the same mistake again ;) Bretonbanquet (talk) 18:21, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
