Whistleblowing and Retaliation[edit]

At Wenzhou-Kean University, an American faculty member alongside several students courageously came forward as whistleblowers, revealing egregious acts of misconduct. These included an assault and battery by a former Dean of Chinese origin against a student in June 2022, the delivery of lectures in languages other than English in violation of university policy, breaches of research ethics, and ongoing hazing and discrimination against international faculty by their Chinese counterparts .

This act of whistleblowing triggered harsh retaliatory measures from the institution, including suspensions and attacks on their reputations. Their revelations brought to light significant ethical violations within the academic framework, highlighting the profound difficulties in maintaining integrity and the dire repercussions for confronting institutional wrongdoings across cultural divides. These incidents accentuate the critical necessity for enhanced whistleblower protections and a paradigm shift toward enhanced transparency and ethical accountability in higher education. The ordeal faced by these faculty members and students underscores the dangers associated with standing up for ethical values and serves as a powerful reminder of the indispensable role that whistleblowers have in preserving the integrity of educational institutions. It demands an urgent reassessment of the ways in which academic communities support and shield individuals who call out misconduct, pushing for systemic reforms to foster a more secure and morally sound academic milieu .
