Steam schooner?[edit]

Forgive my ignorance, but what, exactly, is a steam schooner? I Googled, but no luck. Wapama, as pictured, has one mast, which automatically writes her out of the schooner category. I realize, of course, that her rig could have been altered at some point, as her Red Book listing suggests. But I'm still a bit confused. Is she schooner rigged currently? Was she schooner rigged for most of her career, but currently is not? From her looks, she's a steamboat with auxiliary sail power, so perhaps this was a transitional type of vessel? I suspect there's more to be said here, so if anybody's got sources, please elaborate! --Fullobeans (talk) 07:37, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They were ships built to carry lumber along the Pacific Coast. Originally ship owners converted sailing schooners to steam=--hence the name. Later they were purpose-built as steam ships. Eventally the woodden hulled vessels were replaced by steel ships but their name stuck. Sources:
