Shelden Memorial[edit]

Wally Ulrich won the Shelden Memorial Golf Championship at Rochester MN Country Club in 1948, 1949, and 1950. The Shelden was a major event for the Upper Midwest. Numerous Minnesota pros won it as did some national figures such as US Open champion Jack Fleck. Every time I add these championships to Ulrich's list of victories, someone erases them. I can validate the victories. My golf pro father was good buddies with Ulrich since they were young and Wally spent a good amount of time around me when I was a boy. It is not disputed that he won the tournaments, only that the tournament is not a very notable one. A google newspaper archives search turns up very little about the tournament. It seems to be a very local tournament, barely more noteworthy than a club championship (Fleck lived in neighboring Iowa). Reverting again. Tewapack (talk) 03:29, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you say has been true about the Shelden since the middle 60s. However from 1947 to around 1963, the tournament drew strong fields, including Howie Johnson, also a winner on tour. Back then smaller somewhat obscure tournaments such as the Waterloo Open and the Shelden and the Imperial Valley etc. drew strong fields because the tour wasn't worth much money and the "sun followers" couldn't pass up a chance to earn a check. Most of the tour tournaments paid only 20 places and as Fred Hawkins has noted the guys "made more money gambling with each other" than from the purses. You don't have to add the Shelden if you don't want to. Dex Westrum — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.89.61.171 (talk) 20:31, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
