"The waist is the part of the abdomen between the bellybutton and breasts." What, no it isn't! It's below the bellybutton.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.59.27 (talkcontribs) 21:14, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about the hips? Also the picture isn't that good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.216.148.132 (talk) 20:28, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Location[edit]

I thought that the waist is the narrowest part of the torso, which is normally a bit above the navel. The young man measuring himself isn't at his waist, that's his hips... 86.176.15.88 (talk) 23:45, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Must be a matter of perception, then. I always assumed that the waist (on men) was the line where your belt would fit the best, which means that since his belt is a bit lower, he's measuring too high. 63.87.189.17 (talk) 14:48, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So which is it? Above or below the belly button? If below, then how does that differ from the hips? At the moment the text says one thing and the picture another. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.152.44.62 (talk) 13:01, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The bellybutton isn't even consistent. The confusion here arises from sexual dimorphism. A woman's waist is just below her navel, a man's waist is just below the top of the ilium, and thus below the beginning of the 'hips' (inasmuch as a man can be said to have hips, anymore than a standing person has a lap). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.70.113 (talk) 23:24, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Muddled section, Structure and subsections, Waist measurement and Waist–hip ratio[edit]

Can someone sort out this section and its subsections? I’ve had a go at Waist measurement, and got it into a fairly natural flowing order, purpose > practical > technical . . but most of what’s in there should actually be in Waist–hip ratio or in their parent section, Structure, and some of what’s in those wants swapping between them or moving into Waist measurement.

What I think happened in the subsection I’ve sorted, Waist measurement, is tht successive volunteers volunteered new thoughts, slotting them in at the top each time, and the subsection lost focus, then shape, then boundaries.

Maybe simplest is to scrap the subsections?! - and merge everything from Structure and Waist–hip ratio into Waist measurement?

I know wikipedia is not censored, but I find this image a poor choice[edit]

This image is sourced from File:ToriBell.jpg and File:ObeseManFrontView.jpg. Thus the female example is from pornography and the male example is from a person diagnosed with an illness. Not exactly a good representation of the average waist i.m.o.. Wallby (talk) 12:44, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps File:Human_Body.jpg can be used as a source. Wallby (talk) 12:59, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Adding another remark about WP:OM specifically "Material that would be considered vulgar or obscene by typical Wikipedia readers should be used if and only if its omission would cause the article to be less informative, relevant, or accurate, and no equally suitable alternative is available.".
The source of the ToriBell.jpg image is a company called "suicide girls" which I think classifies as obscene, for it is suicide ideation. Wallby (talk) 10:16, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
