WASP etymology[edit]

I was wondering if it was worth mentioning the source for the name - clearly a play on White Anglo Saxon Protestant and I was of the understanding the band changed the meaning of the acronym to mean We Are 'Sexual Perverts. However, I could be wrong. (Emperor 21:45, 12 September 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Emperor, I think you're close. One of the problems I have with the article is the line where whoever wrote it says "It could be ironic, seeing as songs like 'Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)' hardly fit into the usual picture of White Anglo-Saxon Protestantism." If the dude who wrote that bothered to flip the ANIMAL ep over and listen to the B-side, he would discover a song called SHOW NO MERCY where right in the chorus the lyrics are "White Anglo Saxon, the Violent Reaction" (how come NO ONE EVER mentions this? That track is NOT hard to find). Further, I can't cite this cuz I don't have it anymore and thus this some nasty-ass speculation on my part but Lawless said right in a blurb in a Hit Parader or Creem or something (I think it was a page that had one-liners or small quotes from rock stars) that his 3 main influences were "Jack Daniels, Harley Davidson, and the Klan [i.e., W.A.S.P.'s]" (My personal opinion is they were trying to shock their way to the top by trying to come across as bad-asses). Then you've got that guy from Metallica (Ron McGovney?) giving his version where HE gives W.A.S.P. their name, but I don't buy that either because of the SHOW NO MERCY song once again! I always thought the "We Are Sexual Perverts" thing was a super lame attempt to de-fuse the bomb explosion they could see clearly see coming when they signed to a major label. Lame or not, it seems to have worked, and still to this day know-it-all's will still reveal the kidney stone of wisdom to you that it means "We Are Sexual Perverts". I think when they were on Music-For-Nations, no one was paying attention to metal at all because it hadn't really exploded into mania yet. Seems to me W.A.S.P. is an abbreviation, not an acronym, though a lot would come down to whether there are periods between the letters and how the letters are actually pronounced (i.e., do people say "W-A-S-P" or "Wasp"?). The band are simply called 'WASP'. The dots in between the letters were added as Blackie thought that it would look good on posters etc, and help the band's name stand out. It would seem that the US pressing of the debut album has We Are Sexual Perverts in the etchings of runout, so it would be plausible that someone related to band has come up with acronym as well? –Flammie (talk) 02:47, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy section might be warranted[edit]

I assume few if any rock bands have done the type of things W.A.S.P. are described here to have done. (I mean, Ozzy Osbourne is "legendary", at least in my impression, for allegedly "merely" having bitten the head off a bat or whatever it was on stage.) What's the problem in adding more genres?[edit]

It seems that everytime someone puts another genre related to W.A.S.P., it's instantly deleted and turns back to only Heavy Metal. C'mon, calling W.A.S.P. exclusively Heavy Metal is limiting the conception of their music and images! For instance, until Inside the Eletric Circus, W.A.S.P. was almost completely Hard Rock; their Heavier material came later.

Objectivity[edit]

I understand that everybody editing this page will be big W.A.S.P. fans (hell, I'm one as well) but we should still stay objective. You can't write that The Crimon Idol was

voted by many of W.A.S.P. die-hard fans as the best material this great band have ever produced.

Movie[edit]

W.A.S.P. played themselves for a segment in a low budget movie in the 1980s. I can't remember the movie title, but the concept was that a computer genius hacker gets brought into a magical world and is challenged by an evil wizard type to get through a trap-filled magical labyrinth.

The love interest gets teleported by the evil wizard to a heavy metal concert. W.A.S.P. is the name on the stage, and Lawless is lewdly performing while she is tied up to a rack. He is wearing gauntlets, each with with half of a rotary saw blades. Anyone remember seeing this? Anyone know the name?

The movie that you are wondering about is called "The Dungeonmaster". Originally called Ragewar: The Challenges of Excalibrate and Digital Knights respectively. It was released in 1983 and in 1985, starring Jeffrey Byron, Richard Moll and Leslie Wing. Glam metal[edit]

I'm perfectltly aware of the fact W.A.S.P. weren't a typical glam metal band (they were probably the heaviest and the darkest band on the scene), but W.A.S.P. ARE mentioned in the article on glam metal, and are often associated (if not labeled as glam metal - http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_metal-hair-art.html) with the glam metal scene. Ok!so I remove all the genres sourced by allmusic and musicmight right now and in a second half of the articles wouldt have any genres in their infoboxes! Just to note. References do not go in the Template:Musical artist. Referenced content belongs in the main part of the article. User GripTheHusk did the right thing by deleting them. Links to websites like musicmight should never be used. Allmusic has been discussed numerous times and it has been decided that it is not to be used a reference for genres. If you examine Allmusic correctly the genre they list W.A.S.P. is Pop/Rock. Their styles are listed as hard rock and heavy metal. For Allmusic to be used as a genre reference the infobox would have to say Pop/Rock and nothing else. Every Allmusic article is listed this way and it is one of the reasons it has been rejected as a genre reference. Glam metal is a term describing a band's visual look. There isn't really any such thing a 'glam metal' music. Supposed glam metal bands play hard rock and heavy metal. Glam metal, as a visual image, is applied to bands with big hair, neon coloured spandex clothes and make-up... all of which combine to give the band a feminine look. W.A.S.P. do not have anything remotely close to a feminine look... having more black leather, blood and horror imagery. The term 'shock rock' has been used to describe that style but, like glam metal, shock rock isn't s proper musical genre. Shock rock bands play hard rock and heavy metal. Hair metal?[edit]

I know that the image W.A.S.P. had was more along the lines of Alice Cooper, but then again so was Twisted Sister's and they are definately a hair metal band. I believe it should be added as a genre. Opinions anyone? Rockgenre (talk) 04:37, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Its been mentioned previously on this talk page. The term glam metal is more of a reference to visual style or fashion. There really isn't any such thing as glam metal music. Glam metal isn't a distinct musical style. Its OK to say a band has a glam metal look. But since it isn't really a defined musical genre it does not belong in a genre box. True, but Ratt, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, etc. all had the image and are listed under the genre, so there is no reason why W.A.S.P. shouldn't be listed as hair metal. Rockgenre (talk) 19:27, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This "independent" release was actually released on Restless Records, a division of Enigma, recording # 72104-4 (taken directly from my cassette of this release)Copyright 1985, Sanctuary Productions, inc.

This should be reflected on the front page. I would make the changes but don't feel like messing it up and having someone give me grief for it.

EP's and such[edit]

This article could use the help of an expert. These guys have put out albums that are not listed. The EP for Animal, which I believe came out in 1984, isn't listed. If I sorted through my old LP's, I'm sure I'd find a couple more. And there are singles, too. But, again, I'd love to see someone help out who is really on top of the band's history.
