Sources needing re-finding

*The ACM/IEEE paper written by R.T. Gagnon in 1978 needs to be cited by number, since it can't be directly linked due to ACM/IEEE policies. linked as of 6-15-2009

  • The article which mentions the SVA as the first self-contained (complete, i.e. frontend+backend) speech synthesis unit. This is another ACM(/IEEE?) article.
Other TODO stuff
  • add standard votrax phoneme set (used from VS4 thru SC-01-A with the exception of the TRS-80 speech synth)
  • add description of internal workings of frontend (NRL algorithm) and backend(hybrid digital/analog vocal tract model) (note: It might be better to dedicate an entirely new article to this subject alone, ans possibly also to the McIlroy algorithm, which was developed by Douglas McIlroy at Bell labs in the early 1970s for his 'speak' program, and the NIH modifications to it)
  • fix 3rd party device list to include manufacturer name before product name and 'typeface' product names, this is especially important for the mockingboards where there were at LEAST three different versions made <- done, or close to it

Crimtech vs Vysion[edit]

I'd add this to the page, but I don't have any links or citations, just my own experience:

I worked at Vysion back in the mid-90s. The security camera business was a separate company run by mostly the same individuals, and that was handled by "CrimTech." (Actually, not sure whether there was an "h" at the end or not, will have to dig through the basement to see if I can find any printed materials.)

Vysion mostly did Voice Response Units, mainly for Credit Unions and banks. (That's what I did, I programmed those.) Eventually, Maxxar was formed from Vysion and not a lot of changes happened as a result. The same stuff was produced by the same people. McIlroy details[edit]

The McIlroy 'spell' and 'speak' programs were also the distant ancestor of the word processor "Writer's Workbench", (via work by Lorinda Cherry, see http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=806455 ) the story can be seen at http://www.darwinsys.com/history/hist.html under heading 3.9. Alien Group Voice Box for C64 and Mr. Gagnon in Franklin MI[edit]

You mentioned Alien Group's Voice Box for Atari 400/800 but made no mention of Alien Group's Voice Box for Commodore 64.

Is this the guy who was the brains behind the Votrax chips?

Votalker IB 2000[edit]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

PLATO[edit]

One significant early user of Votrax was the University of Illinois PLATO project. It included support for driving the Votrax to speak several languages. It would not do full English text to speech (it needed a semi-phonetic version). But it did handle German, Spanish, and Esperanto text to speech.
