I'm not sure whether to use "Macmillan Brown" or "Notariello" or "Macmillan Brown Notariello" as her surname. Her art was produced before her marriage, and two printed sources use different surnames for her. Thoughts? MurielMary (talk) 10:02, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If a woman becomes notable before she marries, most of the time her maiden name would be the common name. And we use common names for article names. See, for example, this move discussion. It's not quite so clear cut for an artist; when people start writing books about them later on, they may use their married name, and over time, the common name may shift. One of the important things is that readers of Wikipedia may search for a person under different names, and in order to assist them, we set up redirects. I've just done that for Viola Notariello. Hi Schwede66 are you able to give me some tips on how to set up redirects? I think there are two more needed: Helen Macmillan Brown to Helen Connon, and Edith Grossmann to Edith Searle Grossmann (that's also complicated by there already being an article on an American Edith Grossmann - does that need a note at the top of each page to clarify the two people?)
