Vilnus? Before 20th century?[edit]

What is the rationale for calling this old entity Vilnius Voivodeship? I'd rather think it should be Wilno Voivodship (1413-1795). For starters, there never was an entity named Vilnius Voivod(e)ship ([1], [2]). First of all article was merged in "Wilno Voivod." by you Piotrus without any consensus [3] in 2006.03.03. While on talk was left heated discussion with out any signs of consensus, but it not prevented you for merging the article. While yes by this move you stated I have merged the article and moved the talk page. Feel free to move it to Vilnius, but at least now we have one article instead of two. [4]. Am I right? By correcting your move I waited for contributors to state their opinion and as discussion shows nobody supported you and majority of contributors stated for move [5]. And article appeared in the slot before one sided merge conducted by you. And yes there are no hints for your suggestion for Wilno Voivodship (1413-1795) at all. The entity was commonly called Vilniaus vaivadija at least for 250 years since 1413 and only for some 130 years it was officially known as Wojewodstwo wilenskie and it always been a heart of the GDL. I suppose you get the point of the current naming. Iulius 11:29, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. Wilno Voivodeship at the time on the English/Latin/French (not Polish) maps was virtually unknown, Baltic name Vilna was rather popular. If you'd find a map prior 1666 mentioning Wilno (not to say Wilno Voivodeship) I'd be surprised.--Lokyz --Lokyz 20:30, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also disagree with the proposed move. Per arguments presented above and knowing that such names as Kraków Voivodeship are simple invented, as Kraków name did not existed in 14,15 etc centuries. But somehow there are no rename suggestions. And I will repeat myself polonizing Lithuanian, Belarussian [6][7] names are unacceptable without valid arguments. I also invite contributors to investigate there did Piotrus found such names for Nowogródek Voivodeship as he claims M.K. 12:00, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

native name[edit]

Since this area includes territories of present-day Belarus and Lithuania and since the Belarusian language was the official language of the court in the GDL (please, do not start a huge discussion and do not refer to the Lithuanian scholars) we shall put names both in Belarusian and in Lithuanian as native names of the area.
