Own article[edit]

This topic is linked from many articles (see what links here), and the most descriptive target for now is deep down in a very technical section of SNARE proteins (SNARE#Proposed_mechanism_of_membrane_fusion). Therefore, I think it's better to have an own article for this important topic, where readers don't have to know everything about the SNARE protein before getting to the gist of it, and it is to omnipresent to be put as a section in any single of the articles linking to it. If possible, I think this page should be updated to reflect the current state of the field of membrane fusion. In particular, there is very little discussion (save a brief comment) on the actual lipidic merger steps. There is also substantial bias towards the SNARE proteins, whose role in the actual fusion steps remains highly debated (see for brief example Almers W, Nature. 2001 Feb 1;409(6820):567-8). More emphasis should be placed on established roles (i.e. synaptotagmin as the Ca2+-sensor - work of J. Rizo or H. McMahon, among others) and the actual lipidic process of membrane fusion, rather than the speculative roles of proteins. Chanceyvil (talk) 18:20, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, the description is quite lacking. I'll check out my biochem book and see if there is a detailed description. The only source I have that describes it in detail only concerns neurotransmitters. I am relatively sure this is not the only time that vesicle fusion occurs in cell biology.
