Pronunciation[edit]

I have no strong feelings in the often heated debate over the pronunciation of Vesey Street, but it seems to me that the citation provided here is weak. The citation is to an on-line dictionary entry for Denmark Vesey, the great South Carolina insurrectionist and freedom fighter. But the street is named after the Rev. William Vesey, born in Braintree, MA to an successful Church of England family, educated at Harvard, and a protoge of Increase Mather. It seems to me quite a stretch to assume that they pronounced the name in the same way. (Consider, for example, New York's Houston Street, named for a Georgian who pronounced it differently from the great Texan statesman.) Of course, it may well have been pronounced "vee-zee," but given that the traditional NYC pronunciation is "vess-y," (vee-zee becoming common only in recent years) and the name in England is often pronounced "vee-cy" (and of disputed origin), it seems to me something more authoritative than an online dictionary entry about a totally other person is needed.
