"The Wreck of the Old 97" has been called "the first million seller", but so have some earlier discs, including the Original Dixieland Jass Band's "Livery Stable", various Enrico Caruso sides among others. Last I heard, there are no definitive sales figures from the era. I've heard that some sales figures may have been exagerated for publicity, while some record companies of the era may have deliberately lowballed some sales figures to lessen royalty payments and not tip off competition about successes. -- Infrogmation 14:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
