The text in the etymology section seems completely made up. Chaery or Seri is a common suffix in the names of Tamil villages and towns, especially for ones near the sea coast (Neythal nilam). This "vedashreni" story, while within the realm of possibility, seems improbable. Please substantiate any text that is inserted under the etymology section. If no story can be substantiated, then plainly admit that. There is no shame in honestly admitting ignorance. Etymology: Velar is a term for farmer communities that also took part in military campaigns in Chola times. Velir is a term for farmer tribes referred to from Sangam times. Will add epigraphical support soon. Either of these term appear more probable than the term Vel (King). Madhusam (talk) 17:37, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute description: The etymology of the name Velachery is under dispute. Some wikipedia users feel that Velacheri has been the original name, while others feel that the name has its roots in the name Vedasreni

Evidence in support of 'Velacheri': (1) 1000 year old inscription in Velacheri Selliamman and Dhandeeswaram temples recording the name 'Veli Cheri', which is a minor variant. (2) Epigraphical record in official archaeological records of Indian government referred in the wiki article. (South Indian Inscriptions, Vol 2 & 3, year 1911). (3)The detailed description of the term Cheri in book issued by TN State Archaeological department publications.

Evidence in support of etymological source Vedasreni: (1) An individual's blog mentioning belief that Vedasreni was the original name and it evolved to current Velacheri (2) A newspaper report mentioning the same belief

It is evident that the accepted sources of historical information point to 'Veli cheri' being better cited as the etymology source, compared to Vedasreni which is rather a belief among certain sections of users.
