Unduly complicated?

I always thought that in commercial business, value-based pricing is the rule on a free market, since the price a customer is willing to pay is directly related to the expected value. Cost is not a factor until the profit or loss is calculated. If value-based pricing does not lead to a socially acceptable price, there is market failure that should be corrected.
