Valence is also a linguistic term. It has to to with the number of participants in a clause.

This wikipedia page is wrong to say they are two different spellings and wrong to say one is UK one is USA.

They are different words for the same thing, but "valency" was more common in the UK pre 1970s. Since then, both in the UK and USA, and especially nowadays, people use the word valence . I remember the word "valence" from chemistry classes. But chemistry or physics is not what brought me to this article. I'm trying to find out whether "valence" can be used metaphorically to describe something, such as a "thought," that has a certain "charge" to it almost like an electrical charge. Can "valence" be used (metaphorically) as a synonym for something that has a certain polarity or "charge?"
