Origin of name Ustjug-Zhelezny[edit]

This is a direct transliteration of Finnish (Karelian) name Rautajoensuu. (The Mouth of Iron River). As Ustjuzha is located on the confluence of rivers Mologa and its tributary Izhina it must mean that Izhina was formely known with name Iron River. Mologa was used, much earlier than the Russians appeared to the scene, as one of main river trade route in this Karelian and Meri populated area.

The Meri (Merja) and Karelian tribes founded many wooden settlements and river forts in the area, many still existing as inhabited places today, even some having Karelian speaking minority, just as Vessi (Vosjegonsk), but with later given Russificated names.
