why is this here?

Content

A lot of material has been added to the UT article this week, but a section on academics is still needed. Since academics is the heart of a university, this is a major omission and a glaring weakness. Also, there are places where the text is wordy, so perhaps some pruning could be done. - A. Academics is also the hardest area to write about at a small University where few famous professors teach and verification is hard to come by. At the moment i'm working on the issues with verification. Most every statement raised can be found on the school's website or those of the the school's various organazations i'm working on including those in a reference list. You're right, it's difficult. Perhaps just a list of some of the better, or better-known, majors could be added. To an outsider, all I know about is the Sykes College of Business. Perhaps UT has others that are just as well known, or even better known? - A. Nonymous 00:13, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Well really the college of business is the only one on campus besides the liberal arts college. there is a nursing school and they just spun off a graduate program. I'll look into writing up something about the better known majors. Question. Does anyone know how to get the current US News Rankings? I think that would enhance the article since the school tends to play up its rankings but i can't find it listed on their website and US News requires a subscription.

So i added Academics. As i said i was never too comfortable with writing up this section so I'm not too happy about it. I tried to include some intresting somewhat unique aspects of the school. I'm sure my co-editor A. Nonymous will have a field day editing it. sorry. Anyways I'll be back in Tampa in two weeks i plan to take a few pics and add them to spruce up the article. The three colleges comes from this link http://www.ut.edu/aboutut/ scroll down to academics. Of course the Lib Arts and Biz school are not in dispute. I included the Graduate school as separate because the recent addition of a new director of graduate studies. I was on campus at the time and the local school media implied that this indicated a totally separate school. However the official website does not clearly indicate this and the link to the School newspaper does not seem to be working at the moment. So if you want to call it two schools with a graduate program for each that’s cool by me.Trey 07:33, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I think there should be a little more info about the Babe Ruth baseball marker in front of the Sykes building with perhaps a photo of the marker itself. I think if we have the Anti-Gravity rock picture in the article, the Babe Ruth marker should be there as well, since that is one of the landmarks that gets frequently pointed out on campus tours. Well when Babe Ruth did that is wasn't UT so its not expounded on as much what they tell you in the tour is a sales presentation and much of it is not really important to the school itself. the rock was given to the school of UT and while itself is also pretty unimportant it is a pretty rare marker. while babe Ruth just hit a ball where UT would one day be i don't know if a picture of a standard historical society maker would really add to the article. But if you have a pic of it your welcome to add it in and see how it looks. I'm not on campus anymore so am unable to run out and take a picture. It might fit in better at the Tampa Bay Hotel. Or if your feeling really adventurous we could use an article on the Tampa Bay Fairgrounds they are mentioned on the Tampa Bay hotel page. Thats what it was when Babe Ruth hit his home run. Another point if you are where you could take pictures i think we could really use a picture of Sykes since the business school is becoming so critical to UT and maybe one of the newer dorms or at least Vaughn. Currently all we have is plant hall and plant park and they are not really representative of the campus any more. well if you can think of something to add go right ahead or if you have some suggestions i would be happy to write them up myself which ever you prefer. Its accolades are mentioned in the opening paragraph. I would love to see more but I'm at a loss as to what could be added that would improve the article. Verification

Additional verification is needed for many statements. For example, (1) the US News claim, (2) the comments about family backgrounds of Florida and northeastern students, and (3) the involvement of Greek and non-Greek students. Some sort of reference for each would be good, otherwise they can come across as mere opinion or rumor. - I tried to clean up the writing for almost all sections (other than Facilities) but more work is certainly needed. - A. Questions

Does anyone know if the Babson anti-gravity rock is still on the UT campus? Roger Babson was a saavy business man, but rather a scientific quack. (See Martin Gardner's Fads and Fallacies.) If the rock is still on campus then a mention, and maybe a photo, would be a good way to spice up the UT Wiki article. It's a quirky bit of UT history that sets the place apart. - A. never heard of it. If it is it's locked up in a building somewhere or called something else now. Only rocks on campus i know of are the Greek Rocks and they've been moved around so much their not all that much to look at anymore--Trey 00:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC).

I did some research on the rock and i think indeed it might still be on campus i remember seeing a commertive stone that resembles the wikipedia article on it some where on campus. I think at the end of the science wing of Plant hall across from the libary. When i get back into town at the end of the month i'll check that out. Trey 18:34, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Curious. I've noted that on many university pages they have a full list of Grek life groups. I don't want to make a list in the article itself becuase i dislike lists that are long and it would be pretty long. 20+ groups depending on how you count. Is a seprate list page warrented? something along the lines of List of Greek Organazations at the University of Tampa? should it be thrown in the article? I was at UT today for the first time in 10 - 15 years. The anti-gravity memorial, dated 1965, is outside on the end of the large building containing Plant Hall. It is, I think, on the western corner. The monument is similar to the first one shown in this wiki article:

Added the pic User:A. Nonymous provided and a short blurb about the rock to the campus section. Having some trouble getting it to look right though. Anyone wanna take a wack at it? If not I'll try fixing it in a day or two when i have more time. Also when I'm on campus this weekend I'll get the full text to the inscription to add to the article.

History

It might be worth moving the history section to the bottom, as in many Wiki articles for colleges and universities. The History section could be expanded over time, perhaps with help from UT's own web site. I think there should be more info in the history section about the story of Plant Hall. Currently, the history section starts in 1931, when the school was founded. But anyone who has ever visited the school knows that the history of the UT grounds goes back much father than that. There should at least be a link to the Wikipedia page about the Tampa Bay Hotel. I think Teddy Roosevelt's visit and the overall role of the Tampa Bay Hotel in shaping the history of Tampa are certainly worth mentioning. Plant hall is highlighted to go to the Tampa bay hotel. the two pages are very closely related and many references are made back and forth to the two. As for the history section starting at 1931 i think that is reasonable. The article is on UT and its history starts at 1931 all the additional info is spelled out on the Tampa Bay hotel page if w listed it all again here it would be very redundent and make the article bloated with information that doesn't really pertain to the school. While very cool Tampa Bay hotel's past had very little bearing on UT other than what is mentioned. i will try and make the links more frequent and clearer to the Tampa Bay hotel wiki entry.Trey (talk) 17:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I still think there should be a line or two at the beginning of the section referencing the previous history and explaining the circumstances that led to UT's creation. The way it is now, it says that the hotel was defunct and Tampa Junior College decided to move in, but as a reader I'm left wanting more details. Perhaps we could just mention that Henry Plant ran the hotel until his death and after that its business declined (that's more or less what happened, isn't it?). Agreed, i see nothing wrong with mentioning that and it wold give an opportunity to again link to the Tampa Bay hotel site which is also a redirect from Plant Hall in case some one searches for that building in particular. If you want to add in some info go ahead of course. If not when i get some free time I'll try and make the update. As for moving parts of the campus section down to history unless you have some specific passages in mind it might be best to just re-write the opening part of the history. Any other thoughts on improving the article? I've personally always thought the history section needs to be made a little more current the Sykes donation is where it currently ends and that was quite sometime ago and some major things have happened since. In particular the formation of a independent grad school (which itself could have its own section) and the major building projects come to mind.Trey (talk) 22:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Your IP is a shared account from UT and its been used many times to vandalize and its always a danger that it gets banned when someone else uses it to vandalize plus it will let you keep track of your edits and any page you have interest in. Wikipedia really isn't the place for this type of question and you may be better served by the UT home page and the face book and my space groups dedicated to the university. However since I'm here i'll give it a shot. i think the minimum is a 2.5 since thats the academic probation level. I doubt there is a set level or number to tell you. However any thing less than a 2.8 and your going to need some pretty heavy outside involvement to get in and i would suggest having a backup school. A 3.0 and some good community service and you'll be a pretty safe bet if not a lock. if you need anymore info you can leave me a message on my talk pageTrey 00:29, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Endowment Figure

a quick search of the UT website shows assets of $284 million and a budget of $135 million. However i could not find a figure for endowment. It might be buried in a spread sheet somewhere on the site. I'll try and dig it up soon. While I'm on the topic if someone is feeling adventurous an expansion of the business school section to include the Naimoli Institute for Business Strategy. Question

how well is this school known in th community? im planning on majoring in biology going into med school and im an out of state wanting to go to a florida university. im going to either UT or UF in gainseville, which is a lot bigger state school. I am wondering if UT is a prestigious school that would be looked upon good enough to get into a good medical school? please let me know what you know aboout this?!?!? -(JOHN)

New images

I added some new images of various spots around campus. The intent is to give the article a better visual depiction of the campus. I also added the new UT logo. It's essentially the old logo in black and white. I'm a little slow, so it took me a while to figure out how to upload photos. :) It seems there is a lot of rules about copyrights and sourcing of images and whatnot.
