Greatest compliment[edit]

In Episode 16 of Series 44, broadcast on 3 November 2014, "Wikipedia" was answer to the first question, which involved a quote taken from this interview with founder Jimmy Wales about gender inequality. The question was successfully interrupted by Matthew Stallard (PhD in American Studies), from University of Manchester,and the team went on to win the contest: [1]. V for Paxo[edit]

Paxman was accused (but cleared) of bias towards St Peter's Oxford (the alma mater of Mark Damazer) for this exchange, last August:

Paxman: What links Winston Smith’s residence in 1984, May 8th 1945, and Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar?

Oxford, St Peter’s: The letter ‘V’

Paxman: Yeah, we were looking for the word but you’re quite right V does link them all, V for victory, well done.

The BBC’s audience services department said: “We should stress that Jeremy didn’t say he was looking for the whole word until after the answer was given, so the answer was acceptable.
