CAPT Harold "Dutch" Smith[edit]

Can someone with more detailed knowledge of Marine Recon history please enlighten me how Smith received his 1932 Olympic gold medal from Adolf Hitler when the '32 Games were held in Los Angeles? Hitler was a little busy with the July '32 parliamentary elections at the time, and I've never seen a reference that he ever visited the United States. This strikes me as one of those pieces of folklore that float around the military and are impossible to disprove because the people who told it to you outrank you.WiseguyThreeOne (talk) 00:15, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is a valid point: I found it quite odd myself....since the Olympics in 1936 was held in Berlin...it is quite possible that it was a typo, a mistake that "1932" was inputted, when it was supposed to be 1936. I didn't change the date to 1936 because it isn't behoove for me destroy the integrity of the source even it made a clerical mistake. I'm not subject to change what the sources and references had stated. I only conveyed what was written in the documents and don't feel it is my own discretion to alter anything other than what we have on record. I do believe that is indeed the year 1936, but until the Marine Corps amends their documents in FMFRP 12-21, and Maj. Bruce Meyers revises his book, I don't want to tamper with it. Or that I had made the fatal mistake in typing "1932"...I don't have the resources with me since I am out-of-country, once I get back to stateside...I'll recheck and verify if I had made the mistake. Commander of Abemama was not a Captain[edit]

Numerous Japanese accounts confirm that the commander of Abemama garrison was a Japanese Warrant Officer Heishouchou, 分遣隊長：木村功徳兵曹長 His name was Kimura Koutoku. They were part of the Sasebo Special Landing force, the so-called Japanese marines. They were attached to their main unit on Tarawa and acted as a look out and coast watching force. A captain would not have commanded this unit unless he were there by some act of fate.
