Good start, although I would insist that someone add any possible pics of the Ukrainian navy. and also...I recommend a merger to "Military of Ukraine"

Colors and Navy emblem[edit]

Since September 1991, as a Ukrainian journalist born in exile (and since then living part-time in the Western part of the country), I've been paying close attention to Ukrainian Air Forces' and Navy's evolution. Though no specialist (putting aside the fact that I served during nine years as an airman in the Navy), I asked, took pictures and notes in situ, until quite recently — I was in Sevastopol' four weeks ago. And I could see that:

A) The colors used on flags are not (and have never been) these: the "штандарт командуючого Військово-морські сили України" (the upper flag on the 'article page') wears Federal Standard 31305 bright red instead of insigna red to purple and FS35090 - 35110 dark blue instead of FS35035 night blue shown here;

B) The same "командуючого ВМСУ" has a golden fringed border;

C) The "штандарт прапор військово-морських сил України" does not show the Ukrainian flag in the upper left quarter (except on "святкові дні", and this is not indicated in the legend) — the flag given here does not correspond to usage;

D) The blue of the same flag is a bit darker than this one.

I have prepared corrected images. May I add them to the article page or simply replace existing images on this page by the new ones?

Pryvit. As an initial author of the article, I'd like to thank you for your willing to develop it. Images are great input!
Answering your question: judging from your words, you mean the different kind of insignia, the special ones. Those in the article are I think the general ones. In particular, the most common navy flag should contain national flag in its upper corner, sure about it. So, I think you should just add yours' too. But please don't forget to specify the usage difference. Anyway, substituting of images is allowed, especially after you asked for another opinions. But you'd better add. Oh, and some sad reality: Ukrainian military, as well as police, are not very careful about their insignia and uniform. What you saw in Sevastopol could be just the case :)). I share your view about what SHOULD be the usual, daily Ukrainian Navy Flag, at least to my mind… But, actually, as I've been told by ВМСУ officers in Sevastopol' and onboard the Херсонес, and as it have been confirmed to me last night, the one wearing the National Flag is only for Holidays and some special occasions. The USUAL FLAG is the outlined Sea Blue Cross. That is also what says Військово - морська атрибутика України]. Tell me if you're OK for the changes. Бувай! Korenyuk 14:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Korenyuk, you convinced me pretty well. I also agree with DDima. So you'd better add, not replace.

Here's what I suggest:

  • You can add the second flag (that without blue-and-yellow UA flag) and short descriptions to both - these go to the lead. And you should also add that new external link that you supplied to my talk page (or I can do it myself).
  • At stage 2 of your flag edition, you could add extended info on flags and their usage below (and more flag images), in a separate section. That is, to wikify the info from that Ukrainian website.AlexPU 07:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aircraft inventory discrepancy.[edit]

The Ukrainian Navy#Aircraft inventory section lists Sukhoi Su-25 and Mikoyan MiG-29 high-performance jets - the Ukrainian Naval Aviation article disagree and lists Beriev Be-12 flying boats instead. The official website The Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not very informative, can anyone solve the discrepancy? --Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 18:51, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Issues[edit]

  • The first naval activities in the area now known as Ukraine... - Bosporan Kingdom also had ships which can be deemed as naval:) Which RS named chaikas as Navy?
  • By a simple but genius technology, chaika could be transformed into a makeshift shallow-waters submarine used for reconnaissance and surprise landings -:)) Which RS for submarine fleet in XVII century?


  • 1917-1921 - incorrect range - per Central Rada issued Fleet decree March 3 1918 - while since early 1919 UNR does not control any ports at Black Sea - so 1918 would be right
  • whole chapter has numerous issues with reliability of claims -

  • Yes, Ukraine had a navy - for five months, from October 1917 till March 1918 - prior to 1992. Even that was the happenstance of the events of WW-I and the Russian Revolution.Федоров (talk) 18:36, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is the Ukrainian Navy still in being?[edit]

Given various ongoing reports from the Crimean crisis, there are certainly concerns that the Ukrainian Navy no longer exists for all intents and purposes, at least in the sense of an organised force. If this is indeed the case, it may be prudent to consider moving the Ukrainian Navy & it's associated category to Category:Disbanded navies, at least provisionally. There should be no "provisional" declarations of the Ukrainian Navy as defunct until this can actually be verified through reliable sources. It's not going to go unnoticed in media if it actually occurs, so please be patient.

Readability[edit]

I cleaned the article up today to improve its readability.

It would be preferable if a History of the Ukrainian Navy (analogue to History of the French Navy) Wikipedia article would be created to improve the readability of this article (so the "History" section of this article could be trimmed as in the Wikipedia articles on the French Navy). Ukrainian Navy Persistence[edit]

With the...current, extremely volatile, and quickly evolving situation we have directly observed the impacts of it here on this wiki page, leading to its current semi-protected status. Are there any credible sources on the current state of this force? I've heard rumors that they have scuttled their ships. In my eyes, this is a logical action to take, but so far the only source has been Twitter posts. Does anyone have a proper source? Anthropophoca (talk) 10:24, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Issue with the date of origin[edit]
