Truxtun escort of California on Pacific leg of Great White Fleet[edit]

I have a newspaper account of the Truxtun's visit to Jacksonville, Florida and the recollections of one of its sailors on the Ship. He, Frank Bourie, Sr., (the father of my late wife) says that there was a speed contast between the Truxtun and "the west Coast based" Farragut. The Farragut was said to hold the speed record at the time and the Truxtun out ran her. It further states that the Truxtun was rigged with towing halters (since it only could hold 10 days of coal) and became the charge of the Battleship California for the next leg of the around-the-world cruise across the Pacific.

It also has more detail on the trip to Samoa stating that the Truxtun encountered a 65 day Typhoon.
