Movie misinformation

Official Navy history and a number of movie references make absolutely clear the Mister Roberts exterior "set" was the USS Hewell (AKL-14). DANFS, the official history states: "In late August 1954 Hewell departed Hawaii for Midway Island, mooring at the Naval Base there on 28 August to help film the Warner Brothers movie Mister Roberts. The film, starring Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon, was partially shot on board Hewell, with underway footage filmed off Midway harbor between 1-16 September. The light cargo ship then sailed back to Hawaii between 24-29 September and additional film was shot off Kaneohe Bay between 30 September and 7 October." The single reference to this ship being that set was in an in house newsletter of the Keyport station in 1998 while all official histories run counter. My grandfather was Cpt. Sixto Mangual of the AKL-17. He delivered supplies to the Air Force Texas Towers. He was also known for staying in the area of Texas Tower 4, during a massive storm. Unfortunately, the tower went down during the storm with all personnel.
