I began this page by copying the former text from the defunct Cartographic labeling, which had been removed as "Original Research." It wasn't, but it had been missing citations for 12 years and had never been improved, so I suppose it deserved removal. However, the topic is relevant and is a distinct concept worthy of a page. I also copied some text from wiki.gis.com, which was generally better but still not great, and I plan to meld the two and improve it. Bplewe (talk) 17:48, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
