Florida's Turnpike[edit]

What's so special about Florida's Turnpike that it merits a listing on this page? There are many prominent turnpikes in many states. 8.12.63.33 (talk) 14:36, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Turnpike (disambiguation)Turnpike — This is a revert. I am advised, that in good faith respected editors affected the edit, but Toll road is not the WP:Primary topic for "Turnpike" as in British English it has a specific usage relating to Turnpike trusts in the United Kingdom, and that a Google search and a GoogleBooks search do not provide a primary topic. Added to which, the majority of incoming links to Turnpike are for the British English usage (about 250) where the US toll road links remain at about 150, 19 where the word turnpike is included in the road and the articles title. The page Turnpike is currently used as a redirect for Toll Road which I take as evidence that Turnpike is not considered a WP:Primary topic. • Support While it appears to be the case that Turnpike = Toll road in North America, this is not the case elsewhere, and in British English Turnpike = Turnpike trusts/A specific period of road enclosures that resulted in riots. Neither Turnpike trusts nor Toll road are primary, so a disamb page for Turnpike is appropriate. SilkTork *YES! 10:41, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support For reasons given. Presumably, the American turnpikes were also named after the original use of the word. Skinsmoke (talk) 14:03, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support It makes sense that a user looking simply for 'Turnpike' is given the opportunity to choose between the meaning common in UK or US ( or anywhere else). Lumos3 (talk) 08:53, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UK usage[edit]

In the UK a turnpike is understood to be a road maintained by a semi-public body in the 18th and 19th centuries. Often, but not always, this body was a turnpike trust. But that was an organisational structure, not the physical thoroughfare. It is a pity that UK articles can't use the term "turnpike" without being nagged for using a disambiguation page.
