C.S. Lewis[edit]

That is not how C.S. Lewis used the term. He wrote:

"The new Nero will approach us with the silky manners of a doctor, and though all will be in fact as compulsory as the tunica molesta or Smithfield or Tyburn, all will go on within the unemotional therapeutic sphere where words like ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ or ‘freedom’ and ‘slavery’ are never heard."

Article body text needs help[edit]

This text was on the article and needs some help.

Naptha was combined with a bonding agent to create a gel that was then applied to a linnen tunic. This would cause the fuel to burn for three to five times longer then naptha alone. Nero had this technique developed as an "intermission" show in the colliseum, between glatatorial fights. The naptha gel, like naptha alone, would ignite in a burst of flames and cause human primidorial instinct to take over and cause the flaming person to run, trying to get the flames out of their face. At this point the crowds would, like the person on fire, go wild.

Aside from the spelling and style problems (which are fixable) it needs some citation love. I don't know enough about this topic area to try to find appropriate citations for it. --Roman à clef (talk) 08:11, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recategorization OK?[edit]

Hi, several of us are trying to organize the various "history of clothing" categories into a coherent framework, and we'd like to replace Category:Roman era clothing with Category:History of clothing (ancient Rome).. Source given does not support statement in article[edit]

The sentence "The Roman emperor Nero executed some Christians in this way, according to Seneca.[2]" is not supported by the source. The (very antiquated) book cited does talk about Seneca, but says nothing about Seneca talking about methods Nero used to execute Christians. The Roman historians who talk about Nero's persecution of Christians speak of him using them as human torches but as far as I know do not mention this tunica molesta specifically in relation to the Christians. Therefore I am removing this sentence.Smeat75 (talk) 00:44, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Granted that this is an obscure topic with very little written on it in the sources, I think I have pretty much maxed out what there is. There is no more. This is it. Consequently, keeping it Stub class and asking for more is pointless.
