FHC?[edit]

Why is the first picture of a fixed head coupe TR8 when only the drop head coupe (convertible) was a production item?

There were 400 FHCs built, but they were specifically for the Group 4 homologation of the TR7V8 rally car. Admittedly, that issue is complicated because 150 were built, then the car was approved, then 250 more were built to complete the requirement. However, according to Neal Eason-Gibson (when he was motorsport director at the RAC), the FIA allowed such homologation "on intent to manufacture" at the time, and that is documented in an issue of Motorsport magazine from April 1978 covering the problems Vauxhall had with the homologation of the Chevette HS. The FIA did require these homologation specials to be "meant for the normal sale" and required documentation. So that explains why they were sold off and not scrapped when the FHC TR8 didn't go into production, like the O-series engined TR7 were. It also explains any literature on the FHC TR8.

So, except in the section on motorsport, all the pictures in this article should be of convertibles.
