Revertion of edits in Introduction/Lead paragraph[edit]

User:Nwbeeson changed the Introduction/Lead paragraph to "Trachyte is an igneous volcanic rock composed of two distinctly different sized crystals most of which are too small to be seen. It is the volcanic equivalent of syenite. The mineral assemblage consists mostly of tiny crystals of essential alkali feldspar, with a relatively minor amount of large plagioclase and quartz crystals. The large crystals are sometimes a feldspathoid such as nepheline. (See the QAPF diagram). Biotite, clinopyroxene and olivine are common accessory minerals."

I think this is less accurate than the previous (imperfect) version, which I have restored. Most, but not all, trachytes are porphyritic (two distinctly different sized crystals). The section does need to be improved but I think it needs to be reworded in such a way that it avoids giving the incorrect impression that trachyte is always porphyritic. Granite[edit]

No, it is not a type of granite since trachyte is extrusive rather than intrusive. Syenite is the intrusive equivalent of trachyte which isn't a type of granite but rather a granitoid (i.e. it's similar to granite). Volcanoguy 17:10, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
