1980s[edit]

So if the late 1980s saw "the first development of alternative music", I'd love to know what bands like The Birthday Party and the Go Betweens are meant to be? AOR? I'm changing that line because it's obvious that there were some pretty alternative bands before The Cruel Sea Vince In Milan 15:27, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I should say that the Australian rock article should be referred to when writing this article.

Have the following things been included in the article:

- 1950's: Rock and roll & rockabilly (see above link) - 1960's: Rock and roll still going, surf rock (Beach Boys), pop rock (Beatles & Rolling Stones), songs about protest in Vietnam, theatre influence, art rock (Russell Morris), big bands (early Bee Gees) - 1970's: disco, glam rock, pub rock, punk rock, new wave, sexual revolution, emergence of country (Helen Reddy, Slim Dusty etc) - 1980's: synthesiser and drum machine --> dance music; new romantic (Pseudo Echo), new wave (Men at Work), Michael Jackson & Madonna popular, rise of pure pop music almost always recorded by women (Kylie, Jenny Morris), but also men like John Farnham and James Reyne, decline of pub rock and fragmentation of popular music, MTV and rise of promotional videos, also decline of records in favour of tapes and CDs, rise of alternative music - 1990's: grunge popular, dance music overtaking rock in 2nd half of 1990s, rise of R&B music - 2000's: rock overtaking dance in 1st half of 2000s, revival of 60s and 70s music, rise of hip-hop/rap, reality television (Australian Idol etc), pure pop music (Cassie Davis, Sneaky Sound System, Temper Trap, Pegz, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Ben Lee, Missy Higgins, Delta Goodrem), trend of actress-turned-singers which usually released one or two singles only (Stephanie Mcintosh, Tammin Sursok), Holly Valance releasing 2 albums, Bec Cartwright releasing 2 albums - this actress-turned-singer trend began back in the 80s with Kylie Minogue...
