NOTE: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End has now been released and it is revealed that Tia Dalma is definitely the Sea Goddess, Calypso trapped in human form. The two pages need to be combined.

So, here's a subject I'm interested in. "Tía" is the Spanish word for "aunt," and Spanish is spoken in many parts of the Caribbean, particularly Haiti, which is where Vodou comes from. Sooooo, I'm assuming her name is at least partially a title rather than a given name. Does anyone know what Dalma might mean? I can't find it in any Spanish dictionary. Hate to dissapoint, but as far as i can tell "Dalma" as a name simply means "from Dalmatia", which (as is already mentioned in the article) is an anagram of Tia Dalma and an ancinet pirates haven. Naming people after a place their family originated was a popular practice way back when (for example "Chester" in English is a first name, surname, and the name of a town), and a google search shows that there are a fair few people with it as a name. Not much extra to read into it, i think.

@ NAME - I think, that the Name is a hint to what she is, because the spoken name (as they say it in the movie!) sounds very much like "Thea Dorma" which would be "sleeping goddess" (you know these latin words from english "dormatory" and "Thea" as a female form of "Theo" which means "God".) So before I was aware that the name actually is spelled Tia Dalma, I ever thought it has to do something with her real identity. Jack's Compass[edit]

"Tia Dalma is revealed to have provided Captain Jack Sparrow with his compass seven years prior" got a 'citation needed' tag stuck on it. But isn't that right there in the movie? If it's not, it should be removed, not "cited." --Masamage 06:16, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's some inconsistency. Supposedly Jack had Davy Jones raise the Black Pearl from the depths 12 years before the first movie, and was marooned on the island with just his gun and his (apparently broken) compass 10 years before the first movie. He used the compass to come up with the bearing to find the Island of the Dead. So, when did he receive the compass, before the mutiny (as implied by the first movie) or years after (as directly stated by the second movie)?

It was never said that Barbossa and the crew knew the compass worked. Jack gave them the heading for which they would have to proceed to find the treasure but presumably never told the crew about the compass. The Locket[edit]

If you watch the film in HD you'll notice differnences between the locket and the music player. Tia Dalma's locket appears to have a design imitating a face while Davey Jones music player has a similar design but does not imitate a face. However this can be challenged since Jones player was seen at an angle unlike Dalma's locket.-[Nick Mourn]

Calypso[edit]

The article refers to Calypso as "the legendary goddess of the sea"; Calypso was in fact only a minor sea nymph, who played apart in Homer's Odyssey by seducing Odysseus on her island Ogygia for some 7 years. Ill write an edit to that tune.

As to the suggestion of the Calypso page being merged with Tia Dalma, we do not really know if Calypso is truely Tia Dalma, but an entirely different character! Calypso should have her own article.

--combining articles?-- The movie is out, and Calypso is indeed Tia Dalma, the two articles should be merged because the same information here is pasted on the Calypso article.

Another interview thing[edit]

It has been revealed by a FilmFocus interview with Naomie Harris that Tia Dalma journeys with the crew of the Black Pearl to the world's end, where Jack's dead body is found on the Pearl, covered in mucus.[citation needed] She is also "...not really who she says she is, she is a lot more powerful" as Harris said. That is all she revealed about this matter; the biggest spoiler she revealed is that she is the cause of Jack's rebirth.

Dialect[edit]

My mother is, to put it lightly, facinated with Tia Dalma's dialect... Was just wondering if anyone knows what dialect she speaks? My friend says it's a Jamaican dialect, can anyone confirm this?

She appears to be a voodoo priestess (and thus from Jamaica) but this may just be one of her (many) disguises...[reply]

Jar of Dirt[edit]

it is used by jack to hide the Davy Jones's heart, but the dirt doesn't prove any supernatural protection against Davy Jones.Maybe it is only scaramantic or maybe Jack doesn't now how it works!

Spoilers[edit]

Because of spoilers, I edited the text of Calypso (Pirates of the Caribbean) and pasted it back over here, reversing the redirect (I didn't move, both pages have talk pages with history, unsure what to do about that). Since the character was introduced as Tia Dalma, and was referred to as Tia Dalma for 2 of the 3 movies, it makes sense that the article should be centered around this persona rather than the persona of Calypso, who is only important in the third movie and whose existance is a spoiler. I moved all the stuff about Calypso to the section about the third movie, and stuck a spoiler tag on it. Really, people, this shouldn't be THAT hard of a spoiler to conceal! Technically, "Sea Goddess" isn't an occupation. She makes a living as a fortune-teller. She goes by Tia Dalma for 2.5 movies, so that's properly the name of the character. Why does the box on the right-hand side need to contain spoilers? Just for the purpose of spoiling the third film? All of the info is correct, verifiable, and notable without going into the sea goddess thing; in fact, I'd say she's probably more notable as Tia Dalma, as that's the title of this article.
