Untitled[edit]

This article is almost entirely composed of speculation. :T --Masamage 03:22, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Better now! Awesome.

NOTE: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End has now been released and it is revealed that Tia Dalma is definitely the Sea Goddess, Calypso trapped in human form. The two pages need to be combined.

So, here's a subject I'm interested in. "Tía" is the Spanish word for "aunt," and Spanish is spoken in many parts of the Caribbean, particularly Haiti, which is where Vodou comes from. Sooooo, I'm assuming her name is at least partially a title rather than a given name. Does anyone know what Dalma might mean? I can't find it in any Spanish dictionary. Maybe it's from some other language that also uses 'tía'... --Masamage 06:19, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hate to dissapoint, but as far as i can tell "Dalma" as a name simply means "from Dalmatia", which (as is already mentioned in the article) is an anagram of Tia Dalma and an ancinet pirates haven. Naming people after a place their family originated was a popular practice way back when (for example "Chester" in English is a first name, surname, and the name of a town), and a google search shows that there are a fair few people with it as a name. Not much extra to read into it, i think.
Too bad! But thanks for your response. ^^ --Masamage 01:26, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
@ NAME - I think, that the Name is a hint to what she is, because the spoken name (as they say it in the movie!) sounds very much like "Thea Dorma" which would be "sleeping goddess" (you know these latin words from english "dormatory" and "Thea" as a female form of "Theo" which means "God".) So before I was aware that the name actually is spelled Tia Dalma, I ever thought it has to do something with her real identity. Jack's Compass[edit]

"Tia Dalma is revealed to have provided Captain Jack Sparrow with his compass seven years prior" got a 'citation needed' tag stuck on it. But isn't that right there in the movie? If it's not, it should be removed, not "cited." --Masamage 06:16, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it was right there in the movie. TheContralto 19:08, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thought so. Thanks; I removed the tag. --Masamage 22:03, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's some inconsistency. Supposedly Jack had Davy Jones raise the Black Pearl from the depths 12 years before the first movie, and was marooned on the island with just his gun and his (apparently broken) compass 10 years before the first movie. He used the compass to come up with the bearing to find the Island of the Dead. So, when did he receive the compass, before the mutiny (as implied by the first movie) or years after (as directly stated by the second movie)?

It was never said that Barbossa and the crew knew the compass worked. Jack gave them the heading for which they would have to proceed to find the treasure but presumably never told the crew about the compass. So, to answer your question, he got the compass some time after raising the Black Pearl but before being marooned. Gdo01 00:20, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Locket[edit]

If you watch the film in HD you'll notice differnences between the locket and the music player. Tia Dalma's locket appears to have a design imitating a face while Davey Jones music player has a similar design but does not imitate a face. However this can be challenged since Jones player was seen at an angle unlike Dalma's locket.-[Nick Mourn]

Interview?[edit]

In an interview with Naomie Harris, it is revealed that Jack Sparrow and Tia Dalma were past lovers

I've read several interviews now and found absolutely nothing about this. If it doesn't get backed up pretty soon it'll have to be removed. --Masamage 19:37, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Having seen POTC 2 recently, I had the impression they were lovers. I don't know if it's explicitly stated in the script, but if not, it's strongly implied. -Phoenixrod 22:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, and stating that it's possible is totally fine. But saying it's backed up in an interview ought to be reserved for cases in which it actually is. :) So if anyone can find it, that would be great! --Masamage 01:01, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found the interveiw, http://www.blackfilm.com/20060630/features/noamieharris.shtml--Sweetshine 17:16, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, awesome! Great job, I almost thought it didn't exist! :D --Masamage 18:19, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks...--Sweetshine 19:30, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Calypso[edit]

The article refers to Calypso as "the legendary goddess of the sea"; Calypso was in fact only a minor sea nymph, who played apart in Homer's Odyssey by seducing Odysseus on her island Ogygia for some 7 years. Ill write an edit to that tune.

As to the suggestion of the Calypso page being merged with Tia Dalma, we do not really know if Calypso is truely Tia Dalma, but an entirely different character! Calypso should have her own article.

--combining articles?-- The movie is out, and Calypso is indeed Tia Dalma, the two articles should be merged because the same information here is pasted on the Calypso article.

Another interview thing[edit]

It has been revealed by a FilmFocus interview with Naomie Harris that Tia Dalma journeys with the crew of the Black Pearl to the world's end, where Jack's dead body is found on the Pearl, covered in mucus.[citation needed] She is also "...not really who she says she is, she is a lot more powerful" as Harris said. That is all she revealed about this matter; the biggest spoiler she revealed is that she is the cause of Jack's rebirth.

I'm highly suspicious of this paragraph. Let's find a citation or get rid of it. --Masamage 15:32, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, here's the interview in question. All it says is that she's responsible for bringing him back. --Masamage 15:36, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All it says? Reread the article, here's a direct quote from it "You know, Pirates 2 is just an introduction to the character and then in Pirates 3 she goes on a whole journey with all the characters. You get to discover that she's not actually who she says she is. She's actually a lot more powerful than she makes out." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.67.155.113 (talkcontribs)

Not what I was talking about. The part with the "citation needed" sticker is the part that says they find Jack Sparrow's body covered in mucus on the Pearl. I remain deeply suspicious. --Masamage 00:50, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dialect[edit]

My mother is, to put it lightly, facinated with Tia Dalma's dialect... Was just wondering if anyone knows what dialect she speaks? My friend says it's a Jamaican dialect, can anyone confirm this?

Adsartha 19:40, 17 December 2006 (UTC)I think she is not meant to have any specific accent and her accent is to be a mixture of several accents so that you cannot quite tell where she is really from. She appears to be a voodoo priestess (and thus from Jamaica) but this may just be one of her (many) disguises...[reply]

"She sells sea shells by the sea shore. And the shells she sells are surely sea shells. Since she sells shells by the sea shore, I'm sure the shells she sells are seashore shells. (Sorry, couldn't resist... ^^) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.228.148.172 (talk) 19:15, 8 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Voodoo Lady[edit]

Forgive me for the sacriledge, but I re-entered the entry noting similarities between the characters. It's not original research since several fans have noted these similarities before me and you can look online for such opinions. Pictureuploader 11:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jar of Dirt[edit]

I was wondering if this should be mentioned. When jack gave tia the monkey she gave him a jar of dirt help him in some way. Should it mentioned how the jar of dirt was helpful? Lovingnews1989 11:06, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, but how was the jar helpful? ;) Tphi 21:07, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thats true. Lovingnews1989 09:05, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

it is used by jack to hide the Davy Jones's heart, but the dirt doesn't prove any supernatural protection against Davy Jones.Maybe it is only scaramantic or maybe Jack doesn't now how it works!

Davy Jones can't step on land until once every 10 years have passed, so the dirt will serve as land, that's why in the third movie he was in a bucket of water :) (70.187.170.226 20:39, 28 May 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Well actually he can't step on land except for once ever 10 years if he does his job, which he hasn't, and that's why he is all octopussy, fishy looking.Tylerhuyser 23:05, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Tylerhuyser[reply]

He's quoted as saying 'They're here, and I cannot set foot on land again for near of a decade' in Dead Man's Chest. This would seem to prove part of your argument wrong. ;-) krikkert (Talk) 16:21, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spoilers[edit]

Because of spoilers, I edited the text of Calypso (Pirates of the Caribbean) and pasted it back over here, reversing the redirect (I didn't move, both pages have talk pages with history, unsure what to do about that). Since the character was introduced as Tia Dalma, and was referred to as Tia Dalma for 2 of the 3 movies, it makes sense that the article should be centered around this persona rather than the persona of Calypso, who is only important in the third movie and whose existance is a spoiler. I moved all the stuff about Calypso to the section about the third movie, and stuck a spoiler tag on it. Really, people, this shouldn't be THAT hard of a spoiler to conceal! Kuronue 19:42, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No reply? Great! I'll assume I'm the only editor involved, and as I have consensus with myself, I'll edit the lead as I see fit. Kuronue 19:24, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You have consensus from me at least =) Philip Reuben 22:15, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And now there're third-film spoilers in the first-film brief synopsis. Tsk tsk. Tagged, which will probably bring the masses down upon this article. Kuronue 19:32, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox[edit]

Technically, "Sea Goddess" isn't an occupation. She makes a living as a fortune-teller. She goes by Tia Dalma for 2.5 movies, so that's properly the name of the character. Why does the box on the right-hand side need to contain spoilers? Just for the purpose of spoiling the third film? All of the info is correct, verifiable, and notable without going into the sea goddess thing; in fact, I'd say she's probably more notable as Tia Dalma, as that's the title of this article. Please reply, otherwise I'll once again assume this page is abandoned and edit at will; I'd much rather discuss this. Kuronue | Talk 02:37, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You were right. Since no-one protested, I have now made that change. Ben (talk) 13:12, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
