What did Shakespeare mean? Purple Testament or Purple Vestment?[edit]

Any Shakespeare scholars here? I can't find a good explanation of 'He has come to open the purple testament of bleeding war.' Is there any chance that Shakespeare could alternatively have written 'He has come to open the purple vestment (or purple vestments) of bleeding war.'?

Purple vestments could be soldiers and civilians clothing colored by blood as a result of war and battle.
Purple vestments could be a reference to royalty (was Royal Purple, aka Tyrian Purple a thing during Shakespeare's time?) and the ease with which rulers can send their people into the bloodshed of war.
Purple vestments could be a reference to church leaders (wearing purple vestments) who started numerous bloody Crusades. AdderUser (talk) 05:37, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
