Untitled[edit]

Would this article not be better named "The Old Brewery"? It is a specific location rather than a type of brewery. Greenmaven (talk) 04:11, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your're right "The Old Brewery" would be better. damn why didn't I think of that? I don't know how to move pages I manage to mess it up. So if you don't mind doing it, it would be appreciated. 7mike5000 (talk) 04:17, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's done. Best wishes Greenmaven (talk) 05:27, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Number of murders[edit]

Since this will probably come up again, we should lay to rest Herbert Asbury's statement that the Old Brewery was the scene of a murder a day for fifteen years. The entire city did not reach the level of a murder a day until well into the 20th century (when the population of the city was, of course much higher); see http://qz.com/162289/217-years-of-homicide-in-new-york/. According to Tyler Anbinder (and the graph linked to above appears to bear him out) there were fewer than thirty murders a year in the entire city during the relevant period (Anbinder, Five Points, (2001) p.70). Even allowing for a generous number of unreported murders, Asbury's claim is, as Anbinder says, "ridiculous." 850 C (talk) 01:47, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Making all allowances for this counter-claim, I'm going to doubt every birth and every death was meticulously recorded by the dutiful citizenry of the Five Points, despite their notorious rectitude and painfully high-minded devotion to civic duty.
Or even in New York State generally, where earlier --- c1820s --- I somewhere read of a poor impoverished woman starving to death on a country road through sheer lack of help.

Besides which, there were supposed to be people living there, as in other places around the world, who had never left the building --- *cue spooky music*.
That was all they knew on earth, and all they needed to know'. Claverhouse (talk) 22:32, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Address? Cross Streets?[edit]

Wouldn't it be helpful to indicate where exactly the Old Brewery stood? Mpaniello (talk) 15:03, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
