The monastery[edit]

hello , cannot remember now . According to the DVD extra features it was filmed indoors at a monastery in Germany and outdoors in a built set outside Roma . I guess the outside set was part-built using real buildings.

Holes in the Synopsis[edit]

Major Differences section[edit]

Last line "Adson never knows or guesses the girls name - it is not connected with the name of the book - and he never sees her again after she is taken to Avignon." makes no sense and should be cut. Adso does not "know or guess" the girl's name in EITHER the book or the film, so the writer of that sentence is confused and the significance of the title is discussed at length in the novel's wiki entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.47.174.65 (talk) 20:59, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this section since it was unreferenced and not well-written. Per WP:FILMDIFF, we need to use reliable sources to highlight how a film was adapted from its source material. If anyone wants to add it again, the major differences are that in the book Bernard Gui is not killed by peasants during the confusion of the Abbey fire, but instead leaves for Avignon with the three prisoners before the final conflict. Thus also the girl does not survive, but is presumed to be burnt at the stake. In addition, in the book the Abbot is murdered by Jorge after being trapped in a secret staircase in the labyrinth and suffocating to death, while in the film his fate is unknown.

Cast list[edit]

I have reordered the cast list slightly to make it agree with the IMDB credits order. I have also removed an entry for Mark Bellinghaus, who appears 51st in the cast list, well past the named roles. Berenger vs. Berengar[edit]

In the novel the character is "Berengar," while in the cast list for the movie he was listed as "Berenger." I am assuming that was a typo and have changed the spelling to be consistent with the novel. Durwoodie (talk) 10:00, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adso versus Adson[edit]

The titles at the end of the English version of the movie show "Adson von Melk". This article uses "Adso von Melk". I'm not sure about the discrepancy.
